Doctor Who producer reveals how classic episode narrowly avoided “alarming” hospital incident

While working on the first seasons of Doctor Who, producer Innes Lloyd recalled a frightening situation where the show almost caused problems in British hospitals.

A new BBC Four documentary, ‘Innes Lloyd: The Producer,’ explores the life and career of the television producer through personal notes he wrote about his experiences before his death in 1991.

He explained that the issue of violence was always on his mind, especially because he had young children at the time.

We were quite concerned about one particular scene where a character received an injection – I don’t recall the exact reason why. Shortly after it aired, a nurse contacted us, worried that the scene would frighten children and lead to a surge in kids being brought to the hospital, scared of getting injections.

However, as Lloyd recalled, the scenes had quite the opposite impact.

We then received reports that children were visiting hospitals and doctor’s offices, requesting vaccinations similar to those seen on the TV show Doctor Who, the note continued.

Patrick Lloyd began working on Doctor Who in 1966 and was responsible for well-known stories like ‘The Celestial Toymaker’ and ‘The Gunfighters’. He was also in charge when the show introduced its first ever regeneration – the moment William Hartnell transitioned into Patrick Troughton as the Doctor.

The producer worked on Doctor Who for two years, departing in 1968. Peter Bryant took over after the story ‘The Enemy of the World’.

In 1991, Lloyd died of cancer at the age of 65, however his legacy continues to live on.

The new documentary, with narration by Jane Asher, uses clips from interviews and personal writings throughout his life. It also includes conversations with people who knew him well, like his wife, Susan Lloyd, and actor Frazer Hines, who previously starred in Doctor Who.
