Anticipation grows by the day as I eagerly await the arrival of the new Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea. With Russell Tovey at the helm, it promises to be a captivating journey that I simply can’t wait to embark on!
In a buzz at the Edinburgh TV Festival, the main actor from the spin-off shared excitement about the upcoming series with Gugu Mbatha-Raw. They hinted that it would leave viewers’ hearts racing, or in simpler terms, expecting quite a thrill!
He mentioned: “You might experience rapid heartbeats. You might feel affection. Over and over again, I find myself returning to that, as it’s all about love. This character [Tovey’s Barclay] adores his life, cherishes his family, and is ready to go to great lengths to safeguard them. Prepare to be touched and amused by this.
Tovey further discussed the primary distinction between the spin-off and the original series, explaining: “It takes place within this universe, and an unknown force impacts us. In comparison to how Doctor Who has been in the past, it’s unique because we are typically visiting them, while this feels more like Independence Day.

What initially attracted me was the fact that it portrays our very own world, and we find ourselves faced with an approaching threat.
In my conversation with Rylan, Tovey shared an intriguing detail – climate change is set to significantly influence the storyline of our show.
Despite a lack of specific information about when the show will be released, Kate Phillips, BBC’s Director of Content, has also confirmed that it is scheduled to air in the coming year.
She reassured the fans that Doctor Who will remain on air, as Disney’s collaboration remains strong and we can look forward to ‘The War Between The Land and the Sea’ next year.
The spin-off series will center around Tovey’s relatable character Barclay, who finds himself embroiled in an effort to stop a global catastrophe involving legendary Doctor Who adversaries, the Sea Devils.
Additionally, Tovey isn’t the only notable cast member in this series. Gugu Mbatha-Raw takes on the role of Salt, while Jemma Redgrave (known for her role as Kate Stewart from Doctor Who) and Ruth Madeley (familiar as Shirley Bingham from Doctor Who) will also return to their respective roles.
The War Between the Land and the Sea will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2026.
You can catch up with Doctor Who by streaming it on BBC iPlayer. Immerse yourself in our comprehensive guide featuring reviews for each episode since 1963, detailed cast and crew listings, behind-the-scenes trivia, and exclusive content from the TopMob archive!
