The BBC announced that the Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One this December. They’ve also shared some new photos giving fans a preview of the upcoming drama.
This new five-episode series follows humanity’s reaction to a terrifying, ancient species emerging from the ocean and causing a worldwide crisis.
Recent photos reveal more of Russell Tovey’s character, Barclay, alongside Jemma Redgrave reprising her role as UNIT leader Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and her team.
The show boasts a talented cast including Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Salt, Ruth Madeley as Shirley Anne Bingham, Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim, and Colin McFarlane as General Austin Pierce.

The cast also includes Adrian Lukis, Patrick Baladi, Francesca Corney, Mei Mac, Vincent Franklin, Waleed Hammad, Iestyn Arwel, Hannah Donaldson, Manpreet Bachu, and Ann Akinjirin.
Russell T Davies, the showrunner, described the upcoming Christmas special as a massive, exciting event filled with heroes, monsters, action, and romance, all set in a world facing a crisis. He also added a mysterious warning: ‘Keep an eye on the oceans!’

The upcoming series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, is a Bad Wolf and BBC Studios production for the BBC and Disney. It will first launch on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK this December, and will then be available to stream on Disney+ everywhere else in 2026 (depending on regional availability).
Russell T Davies, the showrunner of Doctor Who, created the series. He wrote it alongside executive producer Pete McTighe, while Dylan Holmes Williams directed the episodes and Lorne Balfe created the music.

The BBC has announced that their collaboration with Disney on Doctor Who will end after the upcoming season, “The War Between the Land and the Sea.” But fans don’t need to worry – a new Doctor Who Christmas special, penned by Russell T Davies, is scheduled to air in 2026, marking the show’s return.
There’s been a lot of discussion about the future of the show, especially after Disney decided to stop being involved, which is a big shift for Doctor Who internationally. However, Kate Phillips, a top executive at the BBC, has assured fans that Doctor Who will continue to air on the BBC, regardless of Disney’s involvement.
The latest Doctor Who episode, which aired in May, concluded with a surprising turn of events: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transformed into Billie Piper, leaving fans stunned.
Doctor Who is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
