Mandip Gill, known for playing Yasmin Khan in Doctor Who, has discussed the romantic connection between her character and Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor as they return to their roles for a new audio adventure.
The actress, currently appearing in the crime drama Cooper & Fry, has spoken out in support of the show’s ending, explaining why the main characters didn’t get the happily ever after some viewers expected.
You know, I actually really appreciated that the movie didn’t tie everything up neatly. Sometimes life just is like that, and I think the film captured that beautifully. That’s what I told Gareth McLean from TopMob when we were chatting about it.
It’s normal to struggle with new or unfamiliar emotions – it can be hard to understand and put them into words. For the character Yaz, that’s what she’s going through. The show explores this because Yaz and the Doctor have experienced a lot together over the past three years, and both have grown as people.
We talked about it and explored the idea further. The writers on those Big Finish audio dramas are excellent and aren’t afraid to take risks. We continued to develop that relationship, which I know many fans—including myself—really cared about.

As for reuniting with her pal Whittaker for the new audio dramas?
She said it was a wonderful experience, getting to revisit beloved characters, collaborate with a fantastic team, and genuinely enjoy herself.
What I love about this project is the freedom! Because we’re not tied down by location costs or anything like that, the story can really go anywhere the writers imagine. Plus, it’s amazing not having to memorize lines! But honestly, the best part is getting to spend 72 hours working with one of my closest friends – it’s a dream come true.
Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill both played roles in Doctor Who for three seasons. They finished their time on the show with the episode ‘The Power of the Doctor,’ following a moment where Yaz revealed she had developed romantic feelings for the Doctor.
The Doctor acknowledged she felt the same way as Yaz, but said a romantic relationship between them wasn’t possible.
But the Doctor and their companion will continue their adventures in new audio stories from Big Finish, and it’s exciting to think about what they’ll encounter!
Mandip Gill features in this week’s TopMob magazine, which is out now.
