Doctor Who star Jinkx Monsoon wants to play iconic X-Men character in MCU reboot

Actress Jinkx Monsoon, best known for her role in Doctor Who, expressed enthusiasm about potentially portraying Mystique in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe’s X-Men remake.

On the Good One podcast, the actress, known for portraying villain Maestro in Doctor Who, expressed her readiness for a transgender woman to assume the role of an X-Men character.

She proposed, “Is it possible to bring about something like that?” Referring to Marvel reacquiring the X-Men rights, she suggested it could be exciting if a transgender woman was portrayed as Mystique in future adaptations.

The speaker noted that the renowned X-Men character’s shape-shifting powers have made her particularly appealing to trans audiences due to the shared experience of feeling a strong connection. The speaker considers this character her favorite Marvel hero ever, identifying deeply with her. She believes many trans individuals can empathize, considering how liberating it would be to seamlessly blend in societal norms and avoid unwanted scrutiny when preferred.

We understand she’s been rejected in her initial appearance. Therefore, she feels compelled to transform just to move among others.

She mentioned, “I sent a message to my representative, saying something along the lines of, ‘I’m not sure about the situation over there, but could you begin mentioning my name?’

In the late 1970s, Mystique debuted in comic books and has since been brought to life on screen by two different actors: initially by Rebecca Romijn in the initial X-Men series, and subsequently by Jennifer Lawrence in the prequels.

In the 2026 film, Avengers: Doomsday, Romijn is expected to return as the mutant character she plays. However, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has hinted at significant recastings after Avengers: Secret Wars. Thus, there’s a chance that another actor might take over the role in the X-Men reboot.
