To mark its 30th anniversary, the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie is getting a fresh look! Fans can soon enjoy a newly restored version in a variety of formats.
This classic 1996 TV movie has been beautifully restored using the original film. A special Limited Edition Steelbook is now available, including both 4K UHD and Blu-ray versions of the 90-minute adventure.
First shown in May 1996, this film featured Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor and was intended to revive the series for both British and American audiences.
This series was a collaboration between the BBC, Universal Television, and Fox. It moved the Doctor’s adventures to San Francisco and featured a new, romantic version of the Doctor played by Paul McGann alongside Eric Roberts as a memorable Master.
The planned American TV series didn’t happen, but the film has gained a dedicated following over time. It successfully connects the original run of the show with the 2005 reboot, adding to the story and letting fans discover the popular Seventh Doctor, played by Sylvester McCoy.
As a movie buff, I’m really excited that this release includes both the original US cut and the uncensored UK version. It’s awesome that fans get to check out different takes on the story and see how it was presented in different regions. It’s a treat for those of us who’ve been following this for a while, and a cool way to rediscover it!
The special features now include interviews with actors Daphne Ashbrook, Eric Roberts, and Yee Jee Tso, who share memories of their characters. There’s also a segment with Sylvester McCoy and Janet Fielding discussing the transition between Doctors.

This release includes a wealth of bonus content, such as two audio commentaries, the isolated musical score, and in-depth details about how the production was made. You’ll also find the “Seven Year Hitch” making-of documentary, Paul McGann’s original audition, and several alternate scenes. Rounding out the extras are behind-the-scenes footage, a press kit, a virtual tour of the TARDIS, and BBC promotional trailers.
This movie will come in a special Steelbook edition, which includes both 4K and standard Blu-ray discs. You can also buy the 4K and standard Blu-ray versions separately.
Doctor Who will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas.
