As fans eagerly anticipate what’s next for Doctor Who after this year’s Christmas special, a BBC Studios executive has shared some insights about the show’s future.
Disney won’t be involved in future seasons of Doctor Who, it was revealed last October. But fans can still look forward to a special Doctor Who episode this Christmas, written by the show’s creator, Russell T Davies.
It was well known that the Disney agreement significantly increased the show’s budget – though the specific amount wasn’t revealed. Recently, Zai Bennett, CEO and Chief Creative Officer of BBC Studios Global Content, was asked in an interview with Deadline if BBC Studios would contribute financially to ensure the show’s continued success.
Bennett clarified he doesn’t represent the BBC’s official position, but emphasized everyone involved is committed to ensuring Doctor Who continues to be produced for the foreseeable future.
He explained that they play a key role in Doctor Who and are committed to its continued success. With the Christmas special on the horizon, they’re eager to start working on future episodes.

Disney collaborated with the team behind Doctor Who to create 26 episodes, enough for two full seasons starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor. This partnership also led to the creation of a spin-off series called The War Between the Land and the Sea.
Prior to the news that the agreement with Disney had ended, Kate Phillips, the BBC’s head of content, affirmed the BBC’s continued support for the show.
Speaking last August, she reassured Doctor Who fans that the show isn’t going anywhere.
We’ve had a fantastic relationship with Disney, but Doctor Who will continue to air on the BBC, regardless of whether that partnership continues.
When the show returns, there are several plot points to address. The last episode featuring Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor ended with a significant change: the Time Lord regenerated into Billie Piper, who fans will remember as the Doctor’s former companion, Rose Tyler.
When Piper announced her return, she shared how much she loves the show and had always hoped to revisit the ‘Whoniverse,’ as it holds many of her fondest memories.
Getting the chance to return to the TARDIS was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. As for the details – who’s involved, how it happens, why, and when – you’ll have to wait and find out!
Doctor Who will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas.
