Doctor Who’s Future Looks Brighter After Netflix’s Latest BBC Update

The future of Doctor Who is looking up. While the show, the longest-running science fiction series on television, faced some challenges in recent years – including declining ratings during Chris Chibnall’s leadership – there was optimism that Russell T. Davies’ return, along with a partnership with Disney+, would revitalize the series. Unfortunately, the second era under Davies didn’t receive the widespread praise hoped for, and the BBC’s deal with Disney ended after just two seasons and one spin-off show, The War Between the Land and the Sea.

Fans are understandably worried about the future of the show, as it was canceled once before back in 1989, though it did eventually return after 16 years. While BBC executives have repeatedly said they support Doctor Who, the current issue is money. The BBC is facing significant financial challenges, especially with ongoing talks about the TV license fee. However, there might be a new solution emerging.

Netflix is Eager to Work With the BBC

Netflix, the leading streaming service and frequent collaborator with the BBC, is looking to strengthen its relationships with broadcasters. According to Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters, who spoke with the Telegraph, a closer partnership with companies like the BBC is a key focus, especially after their failed attempt to acquire Warner Bros. He emphasized that Netflix wants to help broadcasters reach new audiences, stating they are “eager to do that” by finding ways to connect with viewers that broadcasters currently struggle to reach.

Tim Peters is discussing ways to show BBC programs, not to fund their creation through co-production deals. BBC Drama Director Lindsay Salt recently noted the co-production market has largely collapsed, as reported by Deadline. However, some American funding for co-productions is starting up again, with shows like Season 2 of The Night Manager, Season 4 of Industry, and the recent adaptation of Lord of the Flies. This could potentially open doors for Doctor Who. The main hurdle will be the show’s recent ratings, which haven’t been strong. Still, if Netflix prioritizes deals with the BBC, Doctor Who – a well-known British brand – has a good chance of being picked up.

Doctor Who might actually benefit from a shift happening in the TV industry. The BBC was finding it hard to keep up with shows that were costing over $10 million per episode, and that level of spending wasn’t working long-term. In 2025, the big push for streaming began to slow down, with industry figures like Tony Gilroy (from Andor) and the creators of Stranger Things predicting lower budgets across the board. This is good news for Doctor Who, as it won’t need to spend as much money to create a competitive show.

Will Other Streamers Be Open to Doctor Who?

It would be quite ironic if Doctor Who ended up on Netflix, and a collaboration would be ideal. Former showrunner Chris Chibnall explained in Doctor Who Magazine #568 that the BBC originally tasked him with ensuring the show could compete with Netflix. He suggested the next showrunners would face a similar challenge, needing to keep pace with Disney+. Essentially, the idea was to adapt to the changing landscape of streaming by partnering with these platforms. That reasoning still holds true today.

The BBC has successfully collaborated with streaming services before, so a partnership with Amazon is definitely possible. However, a deal with HBO Max seems less likely, considering Warner Bros. and Paramount are currently exploring new strategies. The key will be figuring out how the show will be distributed. During the time Disney had the rights, Doctor Who continued to be available on the BBC’s own streaming platform, iPlayer, within the UK. Any new streaming partner will likely have to agree to a similar arrangement.

It’s not entirely clear what will happen, but The Telegraph suggests a closer partnership could lead to Netflix becoming the primary viewing platform for some people who currently use iPlayer. This raises big questions about the BBC’s future role in British media – a debate that’s already brewing due to ongoing license fee discussions. This potential shift will likely make those negotiations even more complex. However, it’s clear that Netflix is interested, which is definitely positive news, especially for shows like Doctor Who.
