Doctor Who’s lost Cybermen origin story with Peter Davison revived

As a lifelong Doctor Who enthusiast who has seen more episodes than I care to count, I must say that the announcement of “Doctor Who – The Lost Stories: Genesis of the Cybermen” has me positively giddy with excitement! Having grown up during Tom Baker’s tenure as the Fourth Doctor, I can still recall the first time I saw those silver, unfeeling monstrosities on my black-and-white television set. The sheer terror they induced in me has never left, and I eagerly await each new encounter with this iconic foe.

Amongst Doctor Who’s memorable adversaries, opinions may differ about who takes the top spot, but it’s undeniable that the Cybermen have made a significant mark on devoted fans, leaving an indelible imprint on them.

Great news for me, as a dedicated fan! It’s fantastic to learn that I’ll be immersed in a fresh Cybermen story, presented through an engaging full-cast audio drama featuring none other than the Fifth Doctor himself, Peter Davison.

The upcoming release in Big Finish’s Doctor Who – The Lost Stories collection, titled “Genesis of the Cybermen,” delves into the backstory of one of the Doctor’s infamous foes, the Cybermen.

The story you see originates from Gerry Davis, one of the initial inventors of the Cybermen, who collaborated with Kit Pedler in devising the concept of the fictitious race of cybernetic organisms. They were also responsible for penning numerous television tales featuring these characters.

Though the Cybermen have consistently appeared on-screen across various productions, their backstory or origin has never been disclosed within the television series.

In the ’80s, Davis proposed a tale of origin, but it didn’t reach the big screen due to rejections. Now, however, we can be grateful since David K Barnes is transforming it into an audio drama instead.

According to the synopsis for Genesis of the Cybermen: “A King lies dying in his castle.

The elder son, Prince Sylvan, is an artist who shows no interest in claiming a throne, contrasting with Prince Dega who labors tirelessly in his scientific endeavors, striving to save their people from impending extinction. If he fails, they will all perish.

Upon their arrival with the TARDIS, the crew assumes they can lend a hand. However, it’s not just any planet; it’s Mondas. This is where the origins of the Cybermen unfold…

Apart from Davison returning to play the Fifth Doctor, he’ll be accompanied in these new episodes by actors like Janet Fielding, Sarah Sutton, and Matthew Waterhouse, portraying his companions Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric respectively. Additionally, Nicholas Briggs will lend his voice to the Cybermen.

In response to the unveiling of the latest audio drama, producer and director David O’Mahony commented: “Throughout history, the Cybermen have proven to be one of the Doctor’s most formidable adversaries. They are ruthless, indifferent, and relentlessly malicious.

Although Gerry Davis’s theories about origins never got broadcasted, it’s a delight to present this tale now, featuring Peter Davison’s Doctor. By placing it before the Earthshock event, it creates an enticing prequel atmosphere, hinting at the upcoming Cybermen stories that we are familiar with.

Pre-orders are now open, exclusively on the Big Finish site, for “Doctor Who: The Lost Tales – Birth of the Cybermen,” a new release.
