Ncuti Gatwa, who recently starred as Doctor Who, is expanding his career with a voice acting role in a new animated movie. He’ll be joined by Cynthia Erivo, known for her performance in Wicked.
Scheduled for a summer 2027 release, Bad Fairies is a fantasy adventure about a mischievous group of fairies who cause a little chaos in their magical world (according to Deadline).
Erivo signed on to the animated musical last month, and Gatwa is the newest star joining what’s shaping up to be a cast full of famous names. They haven’t revealed which character Gatwa will play yet.
Comedian Deborah Frances-White, known for ‘The Guilty Feminist,’ wrote ‘Bad Fairies.’ Megan Nicole Dong (‘Centuarworld’ on Netflix) and Oliver Staphylas (‘Wish Dragon’) co-directed the project.
The team behind the hit musical Six, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, who won a Tony Award for their work, are joining forces on this new project. They’ll be working with Isabella Summers, a composer and one of the original members of the band Florence + The Machine.
As a big fan, I’ve been following Ncuti Gatwa’s career closely, and this new role is particularly exciting because it’s his first major screen project since leaving Doctor Who. He’s been incredibly busy though, thankfully! After Doctor Who, he immediately jumped back into theatre, doing runs of The Importance of Being Earnest and Born with Teeth in London’s West End.
He recently appeared with Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch in the romantic comedy The Roses. His next project is The Queen of Fashion, a biopic about stylist Isabella Blow, with Andrea Riseborough (known for Alice & Jack) playing the title role.

Everyone expects Bad Fairies to attract a large audience, thanks to Cynthia Erivo’s incredible singing and musical talent.
The British actor began her career on stage, appearing in productions like Sister Act and The Colour Purple. She transitioned to film in 2018, with notable roles in Bad Times at the El Royale, Widows, and Harriet. Her performance as Harriet Tubman in the latter earned her an Academy Award nomination.
As a film buff, I’ve been so excited to watch Cynthia Erivo’s career take off! Especially after her incredible performance as Elphaba in the Wicked movie – it’s really launched her to a whole new level of success.
The first movie earned over $750 million worldwide, and the new sequel, Wicked: For Good, is expected to be just as successful. It finishes the story inspired by The Wizard of Oz and comes out later this month.
Further casting and plot details for Bad Fairies will be announced in due course.
Bad Fairies is coming to cinemas in May 2027.
