The year was 2003, and Mariah Carey said of Jennifer Lopez, “I don’t know her.”
That instant quickly became iconic in pop culture, and it remains well-known today. Now, more than 20 years after the fact, Mariah Carey is finally sharing details about the infamous and controversial moment.
“Honestly, I was telling the truth when I said it,” she explained to Watch What Happens Live’s Andy Cohen on the show on October 1st. “I’m not sure why it became such a big deal. Usually, being honest doesn’t cause that much attention.”
Regarding whether, in the twenty years since then, the singer of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has had the opportunity to officially meet Jennifer Lopez?
“How can I suddenly know—” Mariah began, eliciting laughter from the audience. “Like, you know?”
Andy responded, noting how long the joke had been going on, saying, “It’s incredible how much time we’ve all spent sitting here debating whether or not you know her.”
That offhand remark Mariah made back in the early 2000s has stuck with her-and become a popular meme-over the years. This isn’t the first time the 56-year-old has clarified things on Watch What Happens Live, and it probably won’t be the last.
And as she previously said, there is a difference between knowing and knowing somebody.
“I seem to be forgetful,” Mariah shared with Andy in 2016, clarifying that she and J. Lo have met-but whether they actually know each other is another question. “What am I supposed to say? I’m not going to pretend, ‘Oh, we’re all Hollywood friends because that’s what you do here.’ It’s not meant to offend anyone.”
She later added, “It wasn’t like I don’t know who she is—of course I do. That’s not the question.”
Even back then, nine years ago, Mariah was tired of people bringing up her old comment. She complained, “That happened so long ago, and I can’t believe people are still talking about it like it’s a big deal.”
Yet, the moment has continued to live on—adding fuel to the fire of feud rumors.
As for J. Lo? She, too, has conceded that she and the Butterfly artist have crossed paths.
She playfully admitted to Wendy Williams in 2016, saying, “I’m a bit forgetful, I suppose. We’ve crossed paths a lot, but honestly, I wouldn’t say we’re close.”

Bobby (shown second from left) spoke about reports of a disagreement with Tan (in the middle) in January 2024. This was two months after he revealed he was leaving Queer Eye following eight seasons.
I’m a big fan, and I was so relieved to hear him say that he and Tan are doing okay. He told Vanity Fair, “Tan and I-we will be fine.” Apparently, they went through something privately, and he stressed that it’s completely separate from the show. He wanted to make it clear it was a personal issue that had been building up, and definitely not a romantic one.
In March 2024, Tan addressed claims that he tried to get Jeremiah Brent to replace Bobby on Queer Eye.
Netflix and the production companies held a thorough audition process. I didn’t recommend my friend for the role. They ultimately earned it because they were the most qualified candidate,” he explained on Instagram. “And I didn’t help them get the part by having anyone else removed from consideration.”
After years of speculation about a disagreement between them, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen’s former costar from Charmed, claimed on her December 2023 podcast Let’s Be Clear that Alyssa once told a show producer they had to choose between her and Shannen. This, Combs alleged, ultimately caused Shannen to leave the show in 2001.
In February 2024, Alyssa stated on Instagram, “I didn’t have the ability to cause anyone to lose their job” and added that “this happened so long ago that any current account of these events from anyone is simply rewriting history.”
At a MegaCon Orlando panel discussion the following day, Shannen stated, “I stand by the truth as I know it; there’s no attempt to rewrite what actually happened.“
Shannen passed away in July 2024 after a yearslong battle with cancer.
During a game of Stir the Pot with her daughter Kelly Osbourne on TopMob News in September 2023, Sharon described the That ’70s Show star as the most impolite celebrity she’d ever encountered. She called him a “rude, rude, rude, rude little boy” and a “dastardly little thing.”
He did not respond to her remarks publicly.
Five years earlier, Sharon shared with Larry King that when Ashton was a guest on The Talk in 2014, he seemed annoyed-she said he had an “attitude”-after she mispronounced his name.
She remembered him asking, ‘Who are you, and what have you accomplished in this field?’ She said she responded with, ‘Listen, young man, don’t challenge me, because I will completely overwhelm you.’ Then she added, ‘You have no idea who you’re talking to, kid.’
In August 2022, Cassadee and Maren had a public disagreement with Brittany, the wife of country singer Jason Aldean. This started after Brittany posted a video on Instagram on August 23rd, where she wrote, “I’m grateful to my parents for not letting me transition when I was a kid. I enjoy being a girl.”
In a 2022 TikTok trend, JoJo Siwa called Candace Cameron Bure the “rudest” celebrity she’d met, explaining that Bure had once declined to pose for a photo with her at a red carpet event, which Siwa felt was a rejection. Soon after, the Full House star apologized, saying, “I think I hurt your feelings when you were 11. I didn’t take a picture with you. Oh, that’s awful! I feel bad, JoJo, I am really sorry.”
The two resolved their differences. However, some months later, Candace was questioned about whether the Great American Family network-where she’s the chief creative officer-plans to include same-sex couples as the main characters in its holiday films. She stated that it would not, explaining, “I believe Great American Family will continue to center around the definition of traditional marriage.”
JoJo, who publicly shared that they are part of the LGBTQ+ community in 2021, posted on Instagram that the actress’s statement was “rude and hurtful to a whole community of people.”
Back in June 2021, Courtney Love claimed that Olivia Rodrigo had copied the album cover art of her band Hole for a promotional picture without acknowledging the source. Olivia simply responded, “Love u and live through this sooooo much.” Courtney then replied, “Olivia – you’re welcome. My favorite florist is in Notting Hill, London! Dm me for details! I look forward to reading your note [winking face emoji].”
While on Watch What Happens Live, the actor from Happy Days explained why he and the star of Forrest Gump didn’t get along while filming Turner & Hooch in 1989.
I directed the film for 13 days, and then I was asked to come to Jeff Katzenberg‘s, the producer’s, office. He told me, ‘Do you have all your belongings? You can go home,’ he recalled.
Winkler did seem to have a good relationship with Hanks’ dog. “I got along really well with that dog,” he stated. “I loved that dog.”
He also refused to admit if he’s even seen the flick.
“You know what you did!”
Those who enjoyed The Hills likely recall that famous quote, spoken by Lauren at the beginning of season three. The conflict between them started when Heidi began dating her future husband, Spencer Pratt, and reached its most intense point when Lauren claimed Heidi and Spencer spread a false story about her allegedly being in a sex tape with Jason Wahler.
The actors involved in the Fast and Furious franchise resumed their long-running conflict when Tyrese publicly criticized Dwayne on Instagram. This happened after the release date for Fast and Furious 9 was moved to April 2020. On the very same day, news came out about a Fast and Furious spin-off film featuring Dwayne and Jason Statham, scheduled for release in 2019. The next month, Tyrese stated he would leave Fast 9 if Dwayne remained a part of the movie.
Tyrese later discussed the disagreement, explaining to Van Lathan on the The Red Pill podcast, “I still haven’t spoken to The Rock, but we plan to talk.” He also mentioned he had spoken with The Rock’s production partner, but not with The Rock directly.
Ugh, I can’t believe I did this! I ended up being the one everyone was talking through – like, I was relaying messages for a bunch of people involved with the franchise. But I was the *only* one who actually voiced those feelings publicly. Total blunder on my part, I admit it. It was so not professional, and honestly, just not cool. I really messed up.
No more bad blood here.
Taylor and Katy were rivals for many years, and some believed their conflict even led to Taylor writing the song “Bad Blood.” The issues reportedly began because of a disagreement over a dancer and competition between their concert tours. However, the feud ended when Katy sent Taylor an actual olive branch as a peace offering just before Taylor’s Reputation Tour began.
I just arrived at my dressing room and discovered a real olive branch,” Taylor said in an Instagram video. “This means so much.”
Taylor captioned the video, “Thank you Katy.”
Sex and the City stars Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker had successfully avoided rumors of a disagreement for many years. However, those rumors resurfaced when Kim chose not to participate in a third film and subsequently made statements about her co-star that caused speculation.
During a September 2017 episode of Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen asked SJP how she felt about Kim Cattrall telling Piers Morgan that they had only ever been colleagues, not friends.
Oh my gosh, hearing her say it just destroyed me. She was like, “Just…heartbroken,” and honestly, I felt it *with* her. We’d been talking all week about it, and she was just so upset – she didn’t even know how to explain it. She said she found it really upsetting because that’s not how *she* remembered things, not how our experience actually went down. It’s like, she was reliving it, and I was right there with her, totally understanding how much this was affecting her. It was just… heartbreaking, you know?
It’s definitely sad, but I feel like what really connected us was this unique experience. It started as a professional project, but over the years, it became something deeply personal, taking up so much of our lives. I’m hoping that shared history outweighs anything that’s been said recently,” she continued. “Spending so many years on something special that people truly connected with was a real privilege.
And though they didn’t film scenes together, Kim did make a small appearance on And Just Like That.
The famous singers have been arguing with each other since 2004. During the Q Awards that year, while accepting the Classic Songwriter Award, Elton publicly criticized Madonna, saying, “Madonna, best fking live act? Fk off!” He continued, “Since when is pretending to sing live considered a real performance?” He then apologized, but added that he believed anyone who pretends to sing on stage, especially when people pay around 75 pounds to see them, deserves a harsh punishment.
The former Grey’s Anatomy star caused a disagreement with the show’s creator back in 2008 when she asked to be removed from Emmy Award consideration. The actress explained that she did so because she felt the writing hadn’t provided her with strong enough storylines to deserve a nomination.
Shonda discussed Katherine’s choice in a 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Next Chapter. She explained, “It hurt a little, but I wasn’t totally shocked.” Shonda added, “When someone consistently demonstrates their true character, you should trust what you see. I’ve really taken that [mantra] to heart, and it’s been a valuable lesson for me.”
The fight between Nicki and Cardi at the Harper’s Bazaar Icon party during New York Fashion Week made headlines everywhere. A month later, Cardi publicly explained what started the argument with Nicki.
Cardi B shared in W magazine’s Art Issue that someone has been consistently criticizing her. “I’d already talked to her about it twice, and we’d seemed to resolve things,” she explained, “but she continued the attacks.”
The conflict truly escalated when Cardi noticed Nicki had supposedly liked, and then quickly unliked, a tweet criticizing Cardi’s skills as a parent – something Nicki claims she didn’t do.
I was on track to earn a lot of money from my Bruno Mars tour, but I chose to stay home with my daughter instead,” Cardi explained. “I adore my daughter, and I work really hard to be a great mom. It’s frustrating when people without kids criticize that. A lot of people said the party wasn’t the right time or place to connect with another artist, but I don’t expect to run into someone like that at the grocery store or just walking around town.
The conflict between Kanye and Taylor began in 2009 when the rapper, known for his song “Stronger,” interrupted her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards. Although they later reconciled and became friends, their relationship ended in 2026 following the release of his song “Famous,” which mentioned the “End Game” singer by name.
As a long-time follower of both artists, I noticed something really interesting! On February 2025, just a day before the Grammys, Kanye unexpectedly changed who he follows on Instagram – he started following only Taylor. He didn’t say anything about it, and she hasn’t publicly acknowledged it either. It was a really subtle move, but it definitely got my attention!
“I don’t know her.”
The supposed rivalry between Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez has been talked about for more than 15 years. It began when Mariah, known as the Queen of Christmas, was asked to share her thoughts on various singers in an interview. When the interviewer asked about Jennifer Lopez, Mariah simply stated, “I don’t know her.”
