Dolly Parton is back working her 9 to 5.
A year after the passing of her husband, Carl Dean, the country music icon spoke publicly about recent health issues that caused her to delay her planned concert series in Las Vegas back in September.
As many fans know, I havenāt been touring lately,ā Dolly explained while at her Dollywood theme park on March 13th. āIāve had some minor health concerns, but Iām getting excellent care.ā
The 80-year-old, who hasnāt been seen at a public event since May, hinted at the reason behind her recent health problems.
She explained she was exhausted from grieving the loss of Carl, as well as dealing with other everyday challenges. She realized she needed time to heal and rebuild her strength, both inside and out.
Dolly put fansā fears to rest, too, adding, āAll is good. It didn’t slow me down.”Ā
Dolly Parton says sheās feeling back to normal and has been busy with several projects, including her new Broadway musical, Dolly: A True Original Musical.
She explained sheās been spending a lot of time writing, reflecting, and preparing for exciting things coming up over the next several months. She hinted at more to come, saying, āIām far from finished!ā

Despite her busy schedule, Dolly hasn’t been focused on finding a new partner. She recently clarified that she isn’t dating anyone, especially after the passing of her husband of 58 years last March, effectively dismissing any romance rumors.
She said she believed Carl Dean was waiting for her in the afterlife. She joked that he wouldnāt be pleased if she arrived at heaven with another man, and would probably complain, telling her to leave him outside.
For a look back at Dolly and Carlās six-decade love story, keep readingā¦Ā

After graduating high school in 1964, Dolly Parton moved to Nashville, leaving behind two boyfriends in her Tennessee hometown of Sevierville and wasn’t looking to start a new relationship.
She first encountered Carl Dean on the day she moved to Nashville, while simply walking to the laundromat.
According to Parton, Dean ā who passed away on March 3, 2025, at 82 and rarely gave interviews ā drove past in a white Chevrolet and playfully warned her, “You’re gonna get sunburnt out here, little lady!”

In her 2020 book, Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics, she wrote that they started talking and quickly fell in love. She also recalled in an interview how tanned Dean appeared when they first met. At 6-foot-2, he seemed much taller than her 5-foot frame. The 22-year-old Dean had a naturally bronzed complexion from working in his fatherās asphalt paving business.
Despite the initial attraction, she didn’t immediately get in his car. As Dolly Parton explained in Stephen Miller’s 2011 biography, Smart Blonde, she was cautious, noting the dangers of getting into a car with someone you don’t know. She did invite him to her aunt and uncle’s house the next day, but she only agreed to sit with him outside. He visited her every day for a week, and when they finally went on their first date, he drove her to his parents’ house first. Parton recalled him telling her that he knew from the moment he saw her that she was the one he wanted.

As her songwriting career began to flourish, especially through collaborations with her uncle Bill Owens, who was her boss at Combine Music, Fred Foster cautioned her against getting married. He felt it could jeopardize the exciting progress she was making as a singer and her impending breakthrough.
Rather than wait, she and Deanāwho had been planning a large weddingādecided to get married immediately. They eloped to Ringgold, Georgia, and wed on May 30, 1966, with only the brideās mother, Avie Lee Parton, present to witness the ceremony and take their wedding photos.

Foster had no idea his colleagues were married for an entire yearāthey kept it completely secret. Eventually, a record label executive let it slip, jokingly asking if he was happy they hadn’t tied the knot, given Parton’s increasing fame.
Dolly Parton, known for singing “Jolene,” shared that her legal name is Dolly Parton Dean, but she decided to keep using her birth name professionally because she’d already signed a record contract under that name.
You know, I’ve been a fan forever, and I just love how she always has a sense of humor about everything. She once told The Guardian back in 2014 that if she’d gone by ‘Dolly Dean,’ she joked she’d have been nicknamed ‘Double D’ ā again! It just shows she doesn’t take herself too seriously, and that’s one of the things I admire most about her.

Dolly Parton once brought her husband to the BMI Awards in 1966. Both she and Roy Owens were recognized at the event for co-writing the country song “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.”
As soon as they left, Dean began taking off his tuxedo. Dolly Parton recalls him saying, ‘I’m glad you’re happy, and I want you to follow your dreams. But please don’t ever ask me to attend another event like that, because I won’t.’ He’s kept his word ever since.
This award marked the beginning of a remarkable collection for her, with a total of 48 BMI Awards, 10 Grammys (plus a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011), nine Country Music Association Awards, and thirteen Academy of Country Music Awardsāamong many other honors.
But the real prize was always waiting for Parton at home.Ā Ā

Oh my gosh, whenever anyone asks me the secret to a happy marriage, I always playfully say, ‘Stay gone!’ And honestly, there’s SO much truth to that! I mean, I’m always traveling for work, but when my partner and I are together, it’s just⦠magical. It’s all about appreciating those little, everyday moments, you know? It really is the key, I swear! I told People magazine that back in 2018, and I still believe it!
You know, Carl and I have always kept things pretty simple. One of our first dates was actually at a McDonald’s drive-thru in his old Chevy! And honestly, our tastes never really evolved beyond that. Even with everything Iāve been fortunate enough to achieve ā Forbes estimated my net worth around $440 million last year ā we still love grabbing a bite at local spots and hitting the open road. We especially love Ringgold, Georgia ā that’s where we got married, and it’s a place we visit often.

Dolly Parton shared in 2014 that she enjoys simple pleasures like reading and cooking. She especially loves spending time with her husband and traveling in their RV. Even after long tours, she’s eager to hit the road again, while her husband sometimes jokes about her endless energy for travel. She describes herself as a free spirit and finds life much calmer when she’s away from the public eye.
Though if you wanted to catch her and Dean at Publix or Walmart, you had to stay up late.
Let me tell you, I used to love hitting up those 24-hour stores in the middle of the night! It sounds crazy, but I actually had a lot of luck finding things when it wasn’t crowded. I genuinely love being around people, but when Iām on a shopping mission, I like to keep things moving quickly ā no fuss, just finding what I need!

Fans have often wondered about Dolly Parton’s husband because there aren’t many public photos of them together. As she explained in her 2020 book, this has even led some to believe he’s not real! However, the singer has occasionally shared older photos of the two of them.
She playfully featured her husband on the cover of her 1969 album, My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy. The cover art was a composite image, showing Parton lost in thought about her handsome partner, pictured in a lumberjack shirt.
Parton understood Dean didn’t like being in the public eye, so she made sure to protect his privacy as much as she could.
She told ET in 2020 that he’s a very private person and always believed becoming famous would mean losing all his privacyāand she thinks he was right.

For their 50th wedding anniversary, Dolly Parton and her husband renewed their vows at home, and she finally had the chance to wear the beautiful wedding dress she’d always dreamed of. She also wrote a song called “Forever Love” to accompany their vows ā it was one of several songs on her 2016 album, Pure and Simple, inspired by their lasting love story.
She described their second wedding day to Rolling Stone, saying she wore a stunning gown and made sure her husband looked like a classic Hollywood star. They kept the celebration small and intimate with close family and friends, intentionally avoiding any stress or fuss. They had a simple ceremony at their home chapel and just enjoyed themselves.

Besides being asked about the keys to a happy marriage, Dolly Parton also received many questions about why she and her husband Dean never had children.
Dolly Parton once thought she’d be sad about not having children. When she and her husband first started dating and after they married, they expected to have kids and weren’t taking any precautions. They even picked out names! But it never happened. Now, she believes she wasn’t meant to have children of her own so she could embrace all children as if they were hers.
She told The Guardian that they always loved the name Carla and would have used it if theyād had a daughter. She and Dean often wondered what their children would have been like.
Dolly Parton believes she would have been a wonderful mother, and likely would have prioritized motherhood above her career. She feels she would have struggled with guilt if she had continued working, and ultimately thinks her career would have suffered as a result. She probably wouldn’t have become a star if she’d chosen to focus on raising children.

But as the fourth of 12 siblings, she has had plenty of people in her life to dote on.
Oh my gosh, family means everything to me. For years, five of my younger siblings actually lived with me and Carl ā we were a big, chaotic, loving bunch! And our nieces and nephews? We adore them! Carl and I are getting older now, and we often joke ā honestly, it’s more of a grateful realization ā about how lucky we are that we didn’t have kids of our own. It’s like, we get to enjoy all the fun of being an aunt and uncle without any of the worry! It’s just… perfect.
Which also left more time to focus on each other.
Dolly Parton shared that she and her husband still enjoy small, special moments together. She recalled that every spring, even if there’s still snow on the ground, he brings her a bouquet of the first yellow daffodils and writes her a little poem. She considers these gestures incredibly meaningful, like a romantic date in themselves.
They found joy in simple moments, whether it was a cozy dinner at home or a basic overnight trip ā even a clean bed and private bathroom at a roadside motel was enough to make them happy, as long as they could just be themselves.
Although Dean never attended events like the Grammys or Oscars, Dolly Parton is almost always fully made up ā she even wears mascara to bed! ā and doesn’t need a special occasion to look glamorous. Because of this, Dean often saw his wife looking her best.
She explained that she always makes an effort to look her best for him, because she doesn’t like to appear lazy or unkempt at home. However, she added that he generally doesn’t mind what she wears, as long as she’s happy and he loves her for who she is.
