Over the past month, there has been much discussion comparing the new game “Donkey Kong Bananza” to the Disney movie “Wreck-It Ralph”. Both stories involve a main character known for causing destruction, with “Donkey Kong Bananza” featuring DK alongside a younger version of Pauline, who in the original “Donkey Kong” arcade game was the damsel in distress. However, a recent interview with IGN reveals that the connection between the two is purely coincidental and any inspiration was unintentional.
Motokura stated, “To be honest, we didn’t draw our inspiration from a single specific source as you suggest. Instead, because Donkey Kong has such a rich history, we had numerous Donkey Kong titles to examine and find potential sources of inspiration.

In the creation of Donkey Kong’s Zebra Bananza transformation, music played a significant role in shaping Pauline’s character. The composer crafted an exclusive tune for this transformation that impressed the developers so much they turned it into a song, thereby solidifying Pauline’s role. Vocal performances became a key aspect of Pauline’s persona in Super Mario Odyssey, a game Motokura had previously overseen. However, speculation among fans about whether this implies Super Mario Odyssey is a prequel to the latter remains unconfirmed, as the developers have yet to clarify this possibility.
The character of Wreck-It Ralph in the Disney movie bears a strong resemblance to Donkey Kong, as evident from its creation. The film, in general, acknowledged various video games by featuring game characters and creating fictional ones based on real ones. Not just Ralph, but his counterpart Fix-It Felix was also designed after Mario, who is Donkey Kong’s original adversary. Unfortunately, it appears that any link between ‘Donkey Kong Bananza’ and ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ is merely coincidental, as the creators of Nintendo games didn’t seem to have been influenced by the Disney movie.
In Nintendo’s games, gameplay is usually prioritized over storyline, which explains why Pauline’s singing led to her role in this particular game. However, fans are eager to see if
