The new game Donkey Kong Bananza could be a major reason to buy a Switch 2, offering a fresh experience for the typically 2D character. Coming from the creators of Super Mario Odyssey, it shares that game’s spirit of 3D platforming, but Bananza stands out with its focus on environmental destruction and open, sandbox-style levels.
The next game might build on what Donkey Kong Bananza established, but it will also try new things. Producer Kenta Motokura explained to GamesRadar that, like the transition from Super Mario Odyssey to Donkey Kong Bananza – where ideas foreshadowed future development – this next project will likely contain hints about what’s coming after that. He anticipates ideas from Donkey Kong Bananza will offer clues about their future plans.
Despite all the changes, the game still aims to offer players something new and exciting. No one anticipated Donkey Kong gaining the ability to transform into animal-like forms thanks to Pauline’s singing as he blasts through each level, but that’s exactly what this game delivers.
For me, what really defines a great new game is how fresh and surprising it feels when you play it. When the team was making Super Mario Odyssey, we were constantly brainstorming Mario transformations that players hadn’t experienced before. That’s always our main goal – to create something truly new and exciting with each project.
It will likely take some time before these ideas become a real game. We saw Super Mario Odyssey launch with the Nintendo Switch in 2017, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze came out seven years later, perfectly timed for the Switch 2. While it would make sense to release a third major game with the potential Switch 3, Nintendo might explore other options to capitalize on Donkey Kong’s popularity.
For now, players of Bananza can enjoy DK Island and Emerald Rush, a downloadable expansion pack featuring a new, replayable rogue-like mode and special events that offer unique rewards.
