For a long time, movies based on video games haven’t been very successful. However, we’ve seen some genuinely good adaptations recently. One standout is Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat, which is available on HBO Max and finally delivers the violent, R-rated experience fans of the game have always wanted. A sequel is planned, and actor Lewis Tan has hinted that it will feature even more brutal finishing moves and major character deaths, which is a little worrying!
Details about Mortal Kombat II are still scarce, but dedicated fans are excited that the new movie will finally center around the iconic tournament. The trailer featured Johnny Cage and other beloved characters. However, it seems we shouldn’t get too comfortable with them, as producer Jeremy Tan hinted to ComicBook that several characters will die in the sequel.
Honestly, the creators really put everyone at risk. The script went through a lot of changes, and at one point, many different characters could have died. Eventually, they made it so that anyone could meet their end – there are a lot of deaths in the second movie. But even when a favorite character dies, it’s not necessarily a permanent loss. Death isn’t the finality it seems to be. So, while some viewers will be pleased with how things unfold, others will be very upset by the number of characters who die.
It seems the new Mortal Kombat II will likely satisfy fans who enjoy its violent history. However, I’m curious to see which characters will be killed off, as the developers have hinted at some surprising and potentially upsetting choices. I’m eager to find out if these changes will be revealed soon.
Although the release of Mortal Kombat II has been pushed back to 2026, comments like these will keep fans energized about the upcoming movie. The 1990s Mortal Kombat film, directed by W.S. Anderson, was rated PG-13 and didn’t show as much blood and violence as the games. However, the newer films, directed by Simon McQuoid, don’t hesitate to show fighters being killed in graphic detail, and it looks like any character could be in danger in the sequel.

HBO Max subscriptions begin at $10.99 per month. It’s the streaming service where you can watch all things Mortal Kombat, and with a subscription, you get access to a huge library of movies, TV shows, documentaries, and more. Check out their plans here.
The 2021 film was very violent, and several beloved characters died, including Reptile, Kano, Mileena, Nitara, and Sub-Zero. However, Sub-Zero will become Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat II, which explains why Lewis Tan suggested that death isn’t necessarily permanent in this series. This gives fans hope that even characters who die in the movies might return. I, for one, am really hoping Mileena makes a comeback, especially with Kitana confirmed to appear in the next film.

Fans waiting for Mortal Kombat II will have to wait a little longer. The movie’s release date has been moved from October to May. On the bright side, promotion is now underway, and early glimpses of the film have generated a lot of excitement – including interesting predictions from actor Lewis Tan about what to expect.
We’ll find out everything when Mortal Kombat II comes to theaters on May 8th, as part of the 2026 movie lineup. I’m especially interested in seeing what role Lewis Tan plays in the sequel, even though he wasn’t featured much in the trailer. He’s playing a brand new character, so it will be interesting to see how his story unfolds.
