Don’t Expect Crimson Desert to Be Easy, PS5 Open Worlder Won’t Have Difficulty Options at Launch

Crimson Desert appears to be a pretty difficult game when it releases on PlayStation 5 next month.

While many questions remain about the large-scale open world game, the developer, Pearl Abyss, is beginning to address the most important ones.

I was listening to the Dropped Frames podcast over the weekend, and Will Powers, the marketing and PR director, was on there trying to explain some of the details about the game – apparently GamesRadar reported on it too!

When questioned about the game’s difficulty, Powers emphasized that Crimson Desert isn’t a Soulslike game – a point the developers have made repeatedly.

However, he quickly adds: “Does that mean the game’s easy? Hell no.”

According to Powers, Crimson Desert aims for an open-world experience reminiscent of Elden Ring, though it won’t be as punishingly difficult as a typical Souls-like game.

Players will be encouraged to avoid enemies they can’t defeat and explore other areas until they become strong enough to win the fight.

He explained that players have several options: they can simply leave the area, pursue other activities, improve their weapons, tackle side quests, or search for items to help them win the fight.

Powers explains that the design provides a helpful level of accessibility, preventing players from getting completely stuck, which he feels is crucial for a good single-player experience.

When I heard that news, my first thought, like a lot of fans, was whether Crimson Desert would have different difficulty levels. Sadly, it looks like we won’t be getting those options at the game’s release.

A recent interview with Game Reactor revealed that Pearl Abyss confirmed Crimson Desert won’t have separate difficulty settings. They stated the game currently doesn’t offer different difficulty modes.

We’re curious about how challenging Crimson Desert will be. The game looks incredibly detailed and complex, which could be overwhelming, so we hope it gradually introduces players to its mechanics.
