I’m 36 years old, and I generally feel like I’ve grown up. However, I still have a bit of a childish side, and it definitely showed when I learned about the newest product from GameSir.
I reached out to two editors to get their opinion on whether the name “Pocket Taco” for GameSir’s new controller sounded a little inappropriate.
Even if the name sounds a little strange, the Pocket Taco seems like a perfect handheld device for playing retro-style games.
The Pocket Taco is a handheld game controller designed to look like the original Game Boy, and you can even get it in the classic Game Boy colors.
The Pocket Taco lets you easily insert your phone and hold it securely. Instead of clamps or tight grips, it uses rubber pads to create friction and keep your phone in place.
The Pocket Taco can be connected to your phone using either Bluetooth or a USB-C cable. GameSir states it works with Android and other devices, but doesn’t specifically list support for iPhones or iPads.
The controller includes standard ABXY buttons and a directional pad. It also has responsive, clicky bumpers and triggers on the back.
The GameSir app lets you personalize how the Pocket Taco controls work, including changing what each button does.
The GameSir Pocket Taco controller stands out from other mobile controllers because it’s built for a different kind of gaming. Controllers like the Razer Kishi Ultra and GameSir X2s are made for intense, landscape-style gaming, while the Pocket Taco focuses on classic, retro games played in a vertical orientation.
You can now pre-order the Pocket Taco on Kickstarter for a special price of $34.99. If you support the project, it’s expected to ship in April. Kickstarter backers also get exclusive access to the Atom Purple color option.
You can also pre-order the Pocket Taco through GameSir’s website.
GameSir Pocket Taco review highlights

I recently learned that my colleagues over at GamesRadar+ have already had a chance to play with the Pocket Taco. Apparently, our Hardware Editor, Phil Hayton, leaned heavily into food-related puns while covering it – honestly, he’s showing more restraint than I would have!
Okay, seriously though, I saw a review of the Pocket Taco and it got a 4.5 out of 5! Everyone was really impressed with the battery life, the d-pad felt great, and apparently it’s super comfortable to hold. It sounds awesome!
According to Hayton, the GameSir Pocket Taco cleverly transforms your phone into a handheld gaming device reminiscent of a Game Boy, and can also connect wirelessly as a standard Bluetooth controller for other devices.
Although more advanced mobile gamepads exist for playing most games, this one is great for Nintendo’s older handheld titles. It’s compact and offers a surprisingly comfortable, classic handheld gaming experience.
Growing up with the original Game Boy – and especially loving my Pikachu Game Boy Color – I immediately liked the Pocket Taco. Hopefully, if it does well, they’ll release it in more colors.
