DOOM: The Dark Ages is id Software’s Biggest Campaign to Date “by a Good Bit”

The Dark Ages” is enhancing the formula from the original “DOOM” game in several aspects, one of the notable changes being its transition to a semi-open world design. This change means that instead of separate levels, players will be able to explore multiple interconnected areas within the game, which id Software refers to as “the largest play space ever in a DOOM game”. However, this raises questions about how the game’s duration might be affected.

During a Q&A session at GamingBolt, Hugo Martin and Marty Stratton, the director and executive producer respectively, referred to “DOOM: The Dark Ages” as id Software’s most extensive and ambitious project to date. Although they didn’t disclose the exact game length, Martin described it as “extremely long.” They emphasized that there would be a substantial amount of optional content for players to explore.

Stratton explained that the experience can vary based on how one approaches the game, similar to any other title. However, he emphasized that this is our largest project and campaign to date, significantly surpassing our previous works. If you delve into the levels, you’ll find a wealth of additional content.

Regarding that extra material, Martin mentioned, “I believe it’ll predominantly focus on uncovering hidden elements. If you enjoy delving into secrets and are meticulous about completion, you’ll definitely extend the overall gaming experience for yourself.

Martin additionally discussed the duration of individual stages within the game, sharing that approximately each stage should last around an hour.

He expressed that he prefers keeping things concise, avoiding extended durations. He further stated that a single level should not outlast its intended timeframe. In his opinion, the ideal length is around an hour, without going over. Currently, they are focused on fine-tuning it to maintain this balance. However, he acknowledged that it’s a substantial campaign indeed.

DOOM: The Dark Ages launches on May 15 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
