The DOOM franchise has seen a major revival in recent years, and the excitement continues with a new game that combines classic and modern DOOM experiences. Even more exciting, a new expansion was just announced, introducing the incredible Mecha Dragon as a central feature. We’ve got all the details on this new content and why DOOM fans will love it.
The new DOOM: Arena Board Game is a huge success on Kickstarter, far exceeding its $131,550 funding goal. What makes this game stand out is its inclusion of content from both the original 1993 DOOM and DOOM: The Dark Ages, with expansions adding even more possibilities. A special Kickstarter exclusive expansion introduces the Mecha Dragon Serrat, controlled by the Doom Slayer, complete with a dedicated mini-campaign and a detailed miniature figure.

Whether you choose the original DOOM from 1993 or The Dark Ages expansion, you’ll experience exciting gameplay that’s easy to pick up but challenging to perfect. This encourages replayability as you experiment with different strategies to overcome increasingly difficult waves of enemies. It’s often called ‘heavy metal chess,’ and that’s true for both players: one controls the Doom Slayer, while the other commands the demonic forces.

Why is this worth your time? Several reasons, but one is the incredible attention to detail in bringing each era to life. If you pick the original DOOM from 1993, you’ll experience a wonderfully pixelated version of the classic shooter. It even includes different versions of the player character, changing how you tackle enemies. You’ll battle familiar foes like Imps, Zombies, and Cyberdemons with a range of weapons – from basic pistols and shotguns to powerful rocket launchers and chainsaws – all of which can be upgraded as you defeat enemies throughout the game.
The core of the game revolves around, appropriately, causing a lot of bloodshed – and bringing a key element of DOOM to the tabletop. What makes DOOM so exciting – its fast pace, rhythm, and aggressive style – is reflected in how you spill blood. Dealing damage to enemies not only harms them, but also builds up momentum, allowing you to unlock even more powerful abilities for your Doom Slayer. It’s a rewarding cycle: more damage lets you push harder, but you need to be careful not to overextend.
Even though the original DOOM (1993) had a retro art style, the new miniatures are incredibly detailed and well-made thanks to Modiphius. They look like they came straight from the game, and some of the enemy miniatures are especially intimidating, really adding to the suspense of a battle.
For fans of the newer DOOM games, Modiphius also created DOOM: The Dark Ages, complete with detailed miniatures and some gameplay adjustments. You can choose from three different versions of the Doom Slayer as you fight enemies like Imps, Imp Stalkers, Battle Knights, Pinky Riders, Mancubi, and Arachnotrons. The game also features huge Titans – including Atlan and the Cyclops Titan – offering a serious challenge for players. If you’re interested, you can find DOOM: Arena Board Game on Kickstarter.
