The upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday will reunite many beloved characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Set to release in 2026, the film aims to conclude storylines developed throughout the Multiverse Saga while also bringing back key heroes from the earlier Infinity Saga, such as Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth). Notably, Robert Downey Jr. will return, but this time as the antagonist, Doctor Doom.
With so many Marvel characters set to appear in Doomsday, the movie is expected to be a massive event, similar in scale to Infinity War and Endgame. One of the original Avengers will reprise their role from Infinity War, leading fans to wonder if Secret Wars will follow a similar storyline to Endgame. If it does, we can anticipate another team-up, although it probably won’t be quite as emotionally powerful.
Avengers: Doomsday Seems to Be Repeating Hawkeye’s Absence in Infinity War

I’ve been looking at the confirmed cast for Avengers: Doomsday, and while a lot of familiar faces are coming back, I noticed Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye isn’t among them. Honestly, it doesn’t shock me too much. Aside from his Disney+ show where he mentored Kate Bishop, he hasn’t really been a big part of the newer Marvel movies. After the Infinity Saga, many of us figured the original Avengers would gradually step back, and that hasn’t exactly been the case for everyone, but Hawkeye’s story already seemed to be heading towards retirement even before Infinity War and Endgame. That’s actually why he wasn’t in Infinity War to begin with, as his arc suggested he’d already hung up his bow.
It appears Doomsday is following a similar pattern to Infinity War, with Hawkeye’s potential absence from the movie being a key concern. Unless Marvel is deliberately hiding his involvement – which seems doubtful given their transparency about other returning characters – Hawkeye likely won’t participate in the first battle against Doctor Doom. This leads to speculation about whether his role in Secret Wars will resemble his story arc in Endgame. While Clint Barton desires a quiet life with his family, it’s hard to imagine a threat large enough to bring Captain America back into action wouldn’t also require Hawkeye’s skills.
Could Secret Wars Copy Avengers: Endgame by Bringing Hawkeye Back In?

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m already thinking about Secret Wars and how it’ll tie into everything, especially with the massive threat coming in Avengers: Doomsday. It just feels inevitable that Hawkeye will have to appear, even if he’s not in the beginning. Think about Endgame – when the world is on the line, Clint Barton and his family always get pulled in. Plus, his friends are going to be fighting for their lives! I can’t imagine he’d stay on the sidelines, so I’m betting we’ll see Renner’s character show up eventually.
Things would probably be different for Hawkeye compared to what happened in Endgame, though. Putting his family at risk again would feel too similar to what we’ve already seen. The main challenge with bringing Hawkeye back in the next Avengers films is that it seems necessary, but it’s hard to imagine him having a more impactful moment than his appearance in Endgame.
A Hawkeye Return in Secret Wars Would Never Be Able to Top Avengers: Endgame

In Endgame, Clint Barton comes out of retirement, initially seeking revenge on those he blames for surviving the Blip. He then joins the Avengers in their mission to restore half of humanity. The film establishes high personal stakes for him by showing his family was lost in the Blip, which makes his decision to return to action feel realistic. His connection with Natasha Romanoff adds depth to his story, and their friendship reaches a heartbreaking but unforgettable conclusion in the movie.
If Hawkeye appears in Avengers: Secret Wars, it will be difficult to create a story arc as impactful as his one in Endgame for a couple of reasons. First, the major threat posed by Doctor Doom might again put Hawkeye’s family in danger, but revisiting that motivation could feel like a retread of familiar ground. Second, the special connection between Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff is unlikely to be replicated. While the film could potentially explore a storyline with Kate Bishop, if she’s included, it won’t have the benefit of the ten-year history that made Hawkeye’s sacrifice on Vormir so powerful. Endgame felt like a fitting conclusion to Renner’s character arc, so Secret Wars would need to offer a compelling reason to bring him back.
