Doomsday has long been considered one of Superman’s most powerful and dangerous enemies. When he first appeared, he fought Superman to a brutal draw, and both were initially believed to be killed. However, as is common in these stories, neither remained dead for very long. The backstory established that Doomsday was a genetically engineered creature created by Krypton’s ancient scientists. He was intended to be the perfect, ever-evolving weapon. Even death wasn’t permanent for him, as he always returned, unable to be defeated by the same method twice. Now, Justice League: The Omega Act Special has unveiled a new part of Doomsday’s past, completely altering our understanding of his origins.
People generally believed Doomsday was a creature created solely for destruction. He did, after all, cause widespread chaos throughout the universe before being entombed on early Earth. However, The Omega Act Special revealed a previously unknown history of Krypton’s greatest weapon, demonstrating that he wasn’t originally intended to be Superman’s archenemy. Surprisingly, he was actually designed to assist Superman in protecting the universe.
Made to Be a Hero

This episode featured several scenes looking back at Superman’s mother, Lara, and her close friend, Ursa. The flashbacks showed them exploring old ruins on Krypton on their last day before starting their careers, eager for one final adventure. They ventured into underground tunnels built when Krypton still traveled among the stars. However, they ran into danger – creatures similar to Doomsday – and had to escape further into the tunnels, eventually discovering ancient doors inscribed with the name King Omega.
The room showcased items collected from across the universe. Among the displays were a Green Lantern power battery, the wings of a Thanagarian, and a pulsing, mechanical heart that repeatedly uttered “Darkseid Is.” The two women eventually made their way back outside, with Ursa taking a data pad. She claimed it described Krypton’s most powerful weapon, though the ancient writing was difficult for her to decipher. Lara examined it herself and discovered that Ursa’s interpretation was incorrect. The pad didn’t identify Doomsday as Krypton’s Ultimate Weapon, but rather as their Absolute Champion.
This one change completely alters our understanding of Doomsday’s beginnings and fundamentally changes him as a character. Previously, he was simply the personification of destruction, particularly focused on destroying Superman (2023) #19. However, it has now been revealed that Doomsday is destined to die and reincarnate countless times, ultimately *becoming* the Time Trapper – another one of Superman’s greatest and most enigmatic foes. We’ve long questioned why Doomsday was created to endure even the end of everything, and now we finally have the explanation: he was designed to evolve into a god so he could help defeat another god.
Destinies Tied Together by Hope

For a long time, everyone – even Doomsday – believed he was born from a deep-seated hatred of Kryptonians and a desire to disrupt the natural order. But now it’s becoming clear that he was actually built by some of the universe’s most intelligent beings. They designed him to be the ultimate defender, a champion who would one day be capable of defeating King Omega Darkseid. Instead of being a simple monster, he was created as a symbol of hope, and that completely alters how we view his connection to Superman. The Man of Steel has always represented hope in the DC Universe, and he’s been linked to Darkseid ever since their initial, dangerous confrontation. Now, we understand that their history is even more complex than we thought.
Doomsday has always had an intense hatred for Superman, more than anyone or anything else. He was so determined to fight Superman that he literally escaped from hell, as shown in Superman (2023) #20. Interestingly, one possible future depicted them as the only two survivors at the end of time. Despite their history, they are now forced to team up to defeat Darkseid. Instead of constantly battling Superman, Doomsday must learn from him. He needs to grow and realize that Superman’s unwavering hope is their only path to overcoming Darkseid. Ultimately, Superman and Doomsday represent the universe’s two most powerful forces.
Superman was destined from birth to be the universe’s top hero, and Doomsday was similarly created by brilliant minds for the same purpose. They represent opposite forces, like two sides of the same coin. Though they’ve fought many times in the past, these two powerful beings now need to team up against a common threat – the very enemy they were both created to fight. Darkseid is the ultimate representation of evil and hopelessness, so Superman and Doomsday must embody pure hope to defeat him. Superman already does, and now Doomsday needs to learn from him.
