Dove Cameron Shares Rare Insight Into “Meet Cute” With Damiano David

Dove Cameron and fiancé Damiano David’s meet cute was straight out of a Disney movie.

The actress from Descendants shared the story of how she and the Måneskin band member fell in love, and it sounds like something straight out of a movie.

She told Alex Cooper on the February 4th episode of Call Her Daddy that they started dating in a really unusual way. They first met at the VMAs, which she admitted is a pretty silly place to meet someone – but not because the VMAs themselves are bad!

Rather, she clarified that the run-in “sounds like a book, like a fan fiction.”

Although they met backstage at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, things didn’t immediately click between the two. While the band members – Victoria De Angelis, Ethan Torchio, and Thomas Raggi – were friendly and eager to meet her, her future fiancé wasn’t as welcoming.

She remembered that when they first met, Damiano was standing in the back and didn’t make much eye contact. He also seemed unfriendly, and she immediately thought he disliked her.

It seems the initial coldness from the singer of “Beggin'” wasn’t actually caused by the former star of Liv and Maddie.

Looking back, I realized he was going through a really tough time. It wasn’t about anything I did, but honestly, at the time, I couldn’t help but feel like it was my fault. It really hurt, but I understand now it had nothing to do with me personally.

As it turns out, fate gave the pair a second chance at love one year later.

Dove said things changed when the 2023 VMAs came around. Both she and the person she’s referring to were newly single and doing well personally, which opened the door for them to reconnect.

She said he was really friendly, and then he invited her to his show at Madison Square Garden. She accepted, and they started dating. Now, they’re engaged.

Of the re-introduction, Dove added, “It’s also so, I don’t know, ‘meet cute.’”

The couple announced their engagement in January with up-close photos of Dove’s new sparkler.

Dove shared a photo of her engagement ring on Instagram on January 3rd, captioning it, “My favourite part of being alive.” She also wished her followers a happy new year, showing her and her partner gazing lovingly at each other.

She recounted a heartwarming story about the proposal: it happened while they were packing for a trip, and she was completely natural – wearing a simple T-shirt, no makeup, and with slightly damp hair. He’s 27 years old, and she’s a Disney Channel star.

Dove and Damiano had talked about her wanting a proposal when she was all dressed up, but Damiano had a different idea.

Dove recounted that he told her, ‘I know some people dream of grand gestures, but I want something simpler to show you that I want a real life with you.’ He said he wanted the everyday things – ‘dishes, laundry, and a normal life’ – and to love her as she truly is, ‘in a comfy T-shirt and without makeup.’ He explained he was choosing her and their life together, and hoped she felt the same way.
