
Period dramas have long been popular with audiences, and we’ve seen many successful adaptations of classic novels like Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Little Women. More recently, shows such as The Crown and The Gilded Age have taken the genre to new heights.
Though the series remains popular, the Downton Abbey franchise concluded this year after a 15-year run. This latest film, the third since the show ended in 2015, received good reviews and performed well in theaters. Now, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is also proving to be a big success on streaming platforms, according to FlixPatrol.
Shortly after it became available, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale quickly became the second most popular title on Peacock, following only [previous #1 show]. Globally, The Grand Finale is also performing well on Amazon in Europe, Canada, and Brazil, and is available on iTunes in many countries, including the UK – where the show originated.
Following its successful six-season television run, Downton Abbey continued with three well-received movies. The Grand Finale appears to be the last installment in the series, at least for the time being. The film reunited many of the show’s original cast members, including Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, and Allen Leech. Paul Giamatti returned as Harold Levinson, a character from the series, and Dominic West reprised his role as Guy Dexter from the previous movie.
The cast welcomed new faces like Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. The film also fondly remembered Dame Maggie Smith, who famously portrayed Lady Violet, and previous stars Dan Stevens and Jessica Brown Findlay, who played Matthew and Lady Sybil.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Had a Stunning Reception
The franchise has consistently received favorable reviews. The initial series remains the most critically and popularly acclaimed installment, earning a 92% average score over its six seasons and a 93% audience approval rating. The third and final film also performed exceptionally well, achieving a 91% critic score and a 96% audience score, and earning both the ‘Certified Fresh’ and ‘Verified Hot’ designations. Critics actually rated it the best movie in the entire franchise.
The 2019 movie, named after the original show, received positive reviews with an 84% critic score and a 94% audience score, and earned two special badges. However, it actually received the lowest ratings of any film in the series. The 2022 sequel performed even better, scoring 87% from critics and a remarkable 97% from the audience, making it the highest-rated film among viewers.
