For the last 15 years, this show has captivated audiences with its compelling stories. It first aired for six seasons, and the story continued with three movies.
Okay, so the newest Downton Abbey movie finally hit theaters on September 12th, and thankfully, everyone seemed to really enjoy it – critics liked it, and it did pretty well at the box office! Now, I’m hearing from sources that it’s coming to Peacock on November 7th. I’m definitely setting a reminder for that!
Following the conclusion of the hit TV series in 2015, the Crawley family’s adventures continued in three movies. Currently, The Grand Finale is planned as the last installment, though there’s a possibility more stories could be told in the future.
Like the other films in the series, this one received positive reviews, but it achieved the highest critics’ score of the three movies with an impressive 91%. It’s still rated ‘Certified Fresh’ since its release. Audiences loved it too, giving it a near-perfect 96% rating and a ‘Verified Hot’ badge.
The movie Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale earned $100.4 million globally on a budget of $50 million, according to The Numbers.
The last installment, The Grand Finale, takes place in the 1930s and shows the Crawley family and their servants navigating a changing world. Mary faces a public scandal, and the family struggles financially, putting everyone at Downton Abbey at risk of losing their social standing. As the household prepares for the future and a new generation takes over, the Crawleys must adapt to these challenges.
As a critic, I have to say the cast of The Grand Finale is absolutely stellar – you’ve got Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery, Paul Giamatti, Elizabeth McGovern, Penelope Wilton, and a whole host of other talented actors. Plus, it’s great to see Simon Curtis back in the director’s chair; he also helmed the previous film, and clearly knows this world well.
Will Downton Abbey Return?
Soon after The Grand Finale came out in cinemas, producer Gareth Neame stated he doesn’t currently have any plans for a sequel. However, he hinted that anything could happen down the line. He emphasized that his main hope is that fans enjoy the film and see it as a satisfying conclusion to the series.
Julian Fellowes, the creator of the series, has hinted at the possibility of continuing the story. He acknowledged that further installments are “a possibility,” and joked about not ruling anything out completely. While he’s open to revisiting the world of Downton, he believes any continuation would need to be set in a different time period, presenting the characters with new challenges and issues. He feels that, with the right approach, it’s certainly possible, but remains cautious about what the future holds.
You can stream all six seasons of Downton Abbey on Peacock, along with both Downton Abbey movies: the first from 2019 and the 2022 sequel, A New Era. Finally, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale will be available on November 7th.
