In simpler terms, Michelle Dockery, the actress, recently discussed why Matthew Goode didn’t appear in Downton Abbey’s final episode.
In the concluding movie of the Downton Abbey series, all chapters come to an end as Lady Mary Talbot, portrayed by Michelle Dockery, encounters a new controversy when news breaks about her divorce.
In the first Downton Abbey movie released in 2019, Mary’s former spouse, Henry Talbot (played by Matthew Goode), made an appearance. However, he was not present in the second film, A New Era, as his character had taken a journey and there were subtle indications of marital problems.
Earlier on, Goodede expressed to Deadline his desire to appear briefly in the third movie, sharing a scene with Dockery. However, due to scheduling complications and health concerns, this plan couldn’t be realized.

In my opinion, the foundations for their eventual divorce were subtly established in the second film itself. It was evident that there were underlying issues between them, hinting at trouble down the line. From what I gather, the writers had already planned for their separation early on, regardless of whether Matthew’s character was present. So, it seemed like an inevitable plot twist to me, one that would have unfolded similarly even if Matthew had been part of the movie. In essence, I could sense that their marital demise was not too far off.
Indeed, even though she’s no longer married to Henry, Lady Mary continues to be a central character at Downton Abbey in the finale. The fate of the Crawley family and their estate is a significant topic, given the demise of the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley (the late Dame Maggie Smith).
In an interview with TopMob magazine, Dockery admitted that he felt a lingering sense of apprehension when filming scenes with the late Smith, despite their long-standing friendship spanning fifteen years.

She went on saying: “I’ll cherish those times, especially our Bananagrams games amid the breaks. She was simply amazing at it, and always kind.
Alongside the original actors, there are some fresh faces joining the lineup. Among them are Simon Russell Beale, Alessandro Nivola, Joely Richardson, and Arty Froushan, who will portray playwright Noël Coward in the production.
