Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville calls third and “final” movie “lasting tribute” to Maggie Smith

As a dedicated fan and admirer of the captivating world of Downton Abbey, I find myself deeply moved by Hugh Bonneville‘s heartfelt words about the upcoming third film. The impending closure of this beloved series brings a bittersweet feeling, knowing that we are bidding farewell to the iconic Dame Maggie Smith, who graced our screens as the formidable Dowager Countess of Grantham.

Hugh Bonneville shared that the upcoming third Downton Abbey movie, said to be the final installment in the series, will serve as an emotional farewell to the late Maggie Smith’s character.

On Virgin Radio UK, Bonneville shared some insights about the upcoming movie, stating, “We completed work on what might be our last Downton Abbey film this summer. It’s set to release next September, providing a satisfying conclusion to all the storylines, making it an ideal cinematic experience for devoted fans.

He continued: “The story is deeply rooted within this house, and as we bid farewell to these characters, it’s especially poignant to say goodbye to Dame Maggie. It was emotional on-screen and even more so in reality. Her final performance will undoubtedly serve as a lasting tribute to her memory.

Indeed, Smith played the role of Robert Crawley’s mother, Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham – a character she portrayed consistently across the popular Downton Abbey series and its subsequent movies.

Maggie Smith died last September at the age of 89, and after hearing about her passing, Bonneville made a statement saying that anyone who worked alongside her would agree she had a keen eye, quick sense of humor, and remarkable acting skills.

She was an iconic figure of her time, and fortunately, her outstanding acting work will endure. I offer my sympathies to her sons and extended family.

In terms of the specific tribute the new Downton Abbey movie will offer to the legendary actor, I can only eagerly anticipate what’s in store for us.

Besides Downton Abbey, Smith is also renowned for her leading roles in the Harry Potter movie franchise, Sister Act, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Gosford Park.

In a heartfelt statement at the time of her passing, Dame Maggie Smith’s sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin, shared the unfortunate news: “With profound sorrow, we must inform everyone that Dame Maggie Smith has passed away.

She sadly succumbed to her illness peacefully in the hospital very early on Friday, the 27th of September. Being a deeply private individual, she was surrounded by friends and loved ones during her final moments.

Two sons and five affectionate grandchildren are heartbroken following the passing of their remarkable mother and grandmother, as they are now without her presence.

It’s a pleasure to express our heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional team at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, who showed remarkable compassion and care during her last days.

Appreciate all the warm words and backing you’ve sent our way. For now, we kindly request some space and privacy as we navigate through this situation.

Beyond being a heartfelt salute to Smith, it’s also worth noting that the latest Downton Abbey film is penned by Julian Fellowes and helmed by Simon Curtis in the director’s chair. Notably, several familiar faces from our cherished cast are back for this third cinematic outing.

In addition to Bonneville, the ensemble cast is back, consisting of Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, and Dominic West.

Earlier, Bonneville shared some additional insights regarding the movie with Yahoo UK, describing it as a “warm gathering of individuals” and hinting at exciting “adventures and surprises” ahead.

Regarding my character, it’s likely he’ll follow the norm, portraying a dinosaur-like figure who resists progress, dragged unwillingly towards the future. However, over time, he may take tentative steps forward.

The new film is set for release in September 2025 so here’s to waiting patiently!

All seasons of Downton Abbey are available to stream on ITVX.
