Without the groundbreaking manga created by artist Akira Toriyama, the global phenomenon that is “Dragon Ball” might not have reached such great heights in television and cinema. As we remember our beloved mangaka after his passing, fans of Son Goku and the Z-Fighters continue to honor their history in unique ways. Despite anticipation for the return of both the manga and anime series, the shonen franchise recently commemorated its 40th anniversary and ‘Goku Day’ in May by allowing fans to select their favorite covers from the series’ storied past.
On Dragon Ball’s official website, fans voted for their favorite cover art by Akira Toriyama from the manga series. The poll was conducted to celebrate Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary and Goku Day. Fans were asked to pick their all-time favorite cover illustration from a set of 42 volumes available in Japan. A huge thank you to everyone who participated! Here are the top three winners:
1. [Top Pick Cover]
2. [Second Place Cover]
3. [Third Place Cover]

The Future of Dragon Ball’s Manga
Previously this year, a finished chapter from Dragon Ball Super, crafted by the late Akira Toriyama and artist Toyotaro, was unveiled for the shonen franchise. This installment revolved around Goten and Trunks as they embarked on their journey to transform into the Saiyamen superheroes, but it didn’t signal a resurgence of the manga. Currently, there’s no confirmation about the next chapter of Dragon Ball Super, sparking speculation among fans about whether or not the Z-Fighters will return in the future.
Many fans of shonen genre, particularly those of Dragon Ball, generally anticipate that Toyotaro will carry on the storyline, introducing new adventures for the Z-Fighters. Given the scope of the recent major plot, there is plenty of exciting ground yet to be explored in the comic. Even with Gohan’s Beast mode, Goku’s Ultra Instinct, Vegeta’s Ultra Ego, and Frieza’s current ultimate transformation, Black Frieza, it seems that this formidable adversary will present the Z-Fighters with their most significant challenge. It is not surprising, then, that a large number of manga readers speculate that this unresolved thread will be the next major showdown in the Dragon Ball series.
From my perspective as an observer, it seems Toei Animation hasn’t shared any updates about the future of the Dragon Ball series, especially after the conclusion of Dragon Ball Daima. Interestingly, Daima wasn’t adapted from a manga story, further highlighting the creative liberties the anime team can take within Goku’s world. Here’s hoping we get more Dragon Ball content on both the manga and anime platforms sooner than later.
