Akira Toriyama has quietly confirmed that Dragon Ball GT is no longer considered part of the official Dragon Ball storyline. Fans have debated this for years, especially after Dragon Ball Super introduced events that contradicted GT, making the two series difficult to reconcile within a single timeline.
The question of whether Dragon Ball GT is official canon resurfaced after the end of Dragon Ball DAIMA in 2025, which featured a new take on the Super Saiyan 4 transformation, different from the one in GT. During the recent Dragon Ball Genkidamtasuri event, a video celebrating the anime’s 40th anniversary reviewed the franchise’s history, and Dragon Ball GT was conspicuously left out, replaced by DAIMA.
Dragon Ball GT’s Non-Canon Status Gets a New Official Update at Genkidamatsuri
Toei Animation celebrated the 40th anniversary of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball at Genkidamatsuri with a special trailer. The trailer featured memorable moments from the manga, brought to life with stunning animation. It ended with a recap of the entire anime series and a first look at what’s coming next.
To celebrate Dragon Ball’s 40th anniversary, a video showcased all of Toei’s Dragon Ball anime series, with two exceptions: Dragon Ball GT and Super Dragon Ball Heroes. The video specifically featured the upcoming Dragon Ball DAIMA after highlighting the Dragon Ball Super movies like Broly and Super Hero. This suggests that Toei considers Dragon Ball DAIMA to be officially part of the Dragon Ball story based on Akira Toriyama’s original manga, while Dragon Ball GT is not considered canonical.
There’s been some suggestion that Dragon Ball GT might still be considered part of the official Dragon Ball story. Shueisha, the company behind the franchise, acknowledged it at their 2017 Tenkaichi Budosai event in Japan, and it’s even displayed at the new Dragon Ball Store in Japan. Dragon Ball GT continues to be popular merchandise and holds a special place in the hearts of many fans as a key part of the franchise’s history.

The recent major Dragon Ball anime announcement notably left out Dragon Ball GT, signaling a shift in direction for Toei Animation and Capsule Corp Tokyo. By excluding GT from this significant franchise celebration, it’s clear that the series no longer aligns with Akio Iyoku’s new vision for Dragon Ball. Iyoku is committed to staying true to Toriyama’s original concept following his passing, and Dragon Ball GT is known for having limited direct involvement from the series creator.
Akira Toriyama created the characters and some initial ideas for Dragon Ball GT, but he later revealed he largely left the show’s production to Toei Animation. This is surprising considering he usually dedicated significant personal effort to his work. With Dragon Ball DAIMA now incorporating key elements from Dragon Ball GT – like Goku becoming a child again and the introduction of Super Saiyan 4 – it appears Toei and Akio Iyoku no longer consider Dragon Ball GT essential to the Dragon Ball story. As the franchise moves forward with the upcoming Dragon Ball Super anime adapting the Galactic Prisoner arc, Dragon Ball GT seems to be fading out of the picture.
