While the new anime series *Dragon Ball Daima* began with a lot of excitement, many fans felt the ending wasn’t as strong as they’d hoped. The creators have now explained that this was due to issues with planning the release schedule. *Dragon Ball Daima* was created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Akira Toriyama’s original *Dragon Ball* manga, which first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump. Importantly, this series contains the final story written by Toriyama himself and fits into the official *Dragon Ball* storyline, taking place between *Dragon Ball Z* and *Dragon Ball Super*.
Since *Dragon Ball Daima* finished airing, the people who made the show have shared details about how it was created, giving us a better understanding of the process. For example, it wasn’t initially intended to be a project Toriyama directly worked on, and the team approached it with ideas similar to *Dragon Ball GT*. Interestingly, as reported by @Venixys on X, the story for *Dragon Ball Daima* wasn’t fully planned out in advance – it was largely developed as the show was being made.
Dragon Ball Daima Team Talks Weaker Finale
Akio Iyoku, producer of the *Dragon Ball Daima* anime, revealed in commentary for the Japanese Blu-ray release that the story wasn’t fully planned out when production began. He explained they initially received enough story material for around the first nine to ten episodes. The remaining scripts, from episode ten onwards, were written by Toriyama while the anime was already being made.
Iyoku shared that the production process was filled with uncertainty and anticipation due to the unexpected twists in the anime’s storyline. He admitted he hadn’t predicted where the story would end up. The team repeatedly revised the finale while the episodes were still in development, striving to ensure a smooth and cohesive conclusion as everything came together.
What Actually Happened With Dragon Ball Daima’s Ending?

Iyoku shared that the finale went through many revisions as the team worked hard to find the perfect order of events and content. While he couldn’t share specifics about the different directions they considered for the ending of *Dragon Ball Daima*, he confirmed it ultimately differed from his initial vision. “We changed the sequence of events and who did what quite a bit,” he explained, “it wasn’t the original plan.”
The ending of *Dragon Ball Daima* felt rushed because the show left several interesting ideas unexplored, like the Fusion Bug. It now seems this was due to the story being developed on the fly, rather than having a complete plan from the start. The anime team was essentially figuring things out as they went, which makes the somewhat weak ending more understandable.
