Even after 40 years since it first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball remains incredibly popular and influential in the world of anime and manga. Following Toriyama’s passing in 2024, the Dragon Ball Super manga paused production. Now, Toyotaro, the artist who worked with Toriyama on Super, will continue the series, handling both the art and the story. Fans were eagerly awaiting news, and on January 25th, a special event called Dragon Ball Genki Dama Matsuri was held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. This event, announced in October, celebrated the manga’s 40th anniversary and was the biggest Dragon Ball celebration in years, honoring a truly legendary series.
A new anime retelling of the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, titled Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, is scheduled to premiere in Fall 2026. Fans also got news about a continuation of Dragon Ball Super, called The Galactic Patrol, which will cover the story arc following the Tournament of Power. Based on the manga’s length – approximately 26 chapters – the anime is likely to air weekly. However, no updates were provided regarding the future of the Dragon Ball manga.
The Dragon Ball Super Manga Is Still on Indefinite Hiatus

After Akira Toriyama’s passing in March 2024, a new chapter of the manga unexpectedly appeared in February 2025, but the series is currently on hold again. Although Toyotaro is expected to handle both the writing and artwork, there’s no news yet on when it will continue being published. The anime still needs to cover three more story arcs after the ‘Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga,’ but the manga’s continuation remains uncertain for the time being.
The story picks up a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu in Dragon Ball Z (before the final time-skip), and introduces new, powerful enemies just as Earth is enjoying a period of peace. Dragon Ball Super has evolved a lot over time, and fans are excited to see what happens next with Goku and the Z Fighters. The newest arc, the Super Hero Saga, continues the story from the 2022 movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, focusing on Piccolo and Gohan.
A new threat has emerged in the form of Gamma 1 and Gamma 2, powerful Androids created by remnants of the defeated Red Ribbon Army. Although the future seems uncertain, the manga artist, Toyotaro, is committed to continuing the story, even though following in the footsteps of original creator Akira Toriyama will be challenging. You can watch all episodes of Dragon Ball Super on Crunchyroll and get ready for the next adventure when the anime returns!
