There’s been a buzz lately suggesting that Square Enix might be reviving a beloved classic RPG, Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, through a remake. According to reports by Mp1st, this remake could potentially release towards the end of FY26 or early in FY27.
The remake is thought to be a bold undertaking. It’s not just about enhancing the graphics with better textures and widescreen compatibility; this remake aspires to reach the level of the Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake, which leverages visual methods and technology similar to that introduced by Octopath Traveller.
In a conversation on ResetEra about the report, Jason Schrier from Bloomberg has added his own insights. He believes that it’s reasonable to assume Square Enix is planning to revive older Dragon Quest games through remakes. However, he clarified that these remakes, including the rumored one for Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, won’t be as expansive as the ongoing Final Fantasy 7 Remake series.
According to Schrier’s post, it seems Square intends to port as many Dragon Quest games as they can onto contemporary systems. However, this doesn’t necessarily imply that every game will undergo a major overhaul like Final Fantasy VII Remake.
In terms of the Dragon Quest series, the upcoming release is the highly anticipated HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest 1 and 2, scheduled for launch on October 30. This game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and the rumored Switch 2. The price point will be set at $59.99.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that a fresh installment in the popular Dragon Quest series, titled Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, is under development. This was initially announced as far back as 2021. Since then, Square Enix has not disclosed much information regarding this RPG. Recently, however, director Yuji Horii expressed his apologies for the lack of specific updates on the game’s progress.
Horii admitted that he couldn’t reveal much when asked about the progress of Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate. However, in a video, he assured fans that he was diligently working on the game and promised that the next installment would be fantastic. All he could add was to encourage everyone to look forward to it.
In the same conversation, Horii mentioned a possibility of porting Dragon Quest 12 onto the rumored Switch 2, expressing his belief that it might be compatible. Nevertheless, Square Enix has not disclosed any specifics regarding Dragon Quest 12 at this point.
During the Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary special broadcast in 2021, it was announced that Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate is being created using Unreal Engine 5. As of now, the specific platforms for its release are undecided, but given Square Enix’s recent trend of multi-platform launches, it’s likely to appear on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S at the very least.
