It seems a fresh report indicates that work is underway for a revamped version of Dragon Quest VII, though the precise launch date still hasn’t been disclosed. According to confidential files reviewed by the source, Square Enix is rumored to be spearheading this upcoming remake. As per the document timeline, MP1st speculates that the projected release window points towards a 2026 or 2027 debut.
One notable point in the report by MP1st is their use of “remake” instead of “HD remake.” This leads MP1st to suggest that the upcoming Dragon Quest VII remake might involve more than just graphic updates. It’s quite plausible that
It’s logical because fans previously received a more conventional remake of Dragon Quest VII, titled Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past in English, on the 3DS back in 2016. Unfortunately, as Nintendo closed the eShop for Wii U and 3DS in 2023, obtaining a copy to play today has become more challenging for fans.
As a devoted Dragon Quest fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Dragon Quest XII for over seven years now. It seems that recent remakes and spinoffs in the series might be taking priority, with main-numbered series releases becoming less frequent. If this report from MP1st is correct, it would align with this trend. Few could have foreseen such a long wait.
More recently, some enthusiastic Dragon Quest fans on Reddit stumbled upon an old discussion thread from seven years past, where individuals were speculating about the potential release of Dragon Quest XII, a game that has yet to announce its official launch date in 2025.
Reddit user Xorno60, in a post from seven years ago, stated that if they’re indeed using the same engine as DQXI for the game, it seems odd that it would take 7-8 years to develop. Instead, it might be more likely that DQXIII will release in 2025, as a joke.
2025 has arrived, but it seems we’re still in the same boat, replied user Pretend-Income4427 in response to Xorno60’s remark.
As a dedicated Dragon Quest fan, I was thrilled to dive into the enhanced world of Dragon Quest III last year with the HD-2D Remake! This nostalgic trip was available on various platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam. However, even though most of us appreciated this journey, we had to fork over $59.99 for the privilege of experiencing it once more.
Within only a few short days after its launch, the remade version of Dragon Quest III, titled “Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake,” managed to sell more than 800,000 copies. Barely a month into its release, this game had surpassed sales of 2 million units across the globe.
We’re glad to see so many of you enjoying #DragonQuest III HD-2D Remake!

It’s evident that fans are enthusiastic about the direction the Dragon Quest series is taking, but some were taken aback that Dragon Quest VII was being remade instead of more well-known titles first.
User IvlKu_Mayor expressed that they adore the movie ‘7’, but at this moment, a remake isn’t necessary since there are already two outstanding versions available. On the other hand, only one version of ‘9’ exists, and half of its players lack access to online features due to their unfamiliarity with how it works.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but speculate that we might witness a complete remake of Dragon Quest XI before Dragon Quest XII officially debuts. In a sense, considering the Definitive Edition that dropped in 2019, one could argue that it’s already happened!
