Dragon Quest Creator Yuji Horii Attributes the Series’ Success and Longevity to “Warmth” and “Accessibility”

Dragon Quest is a hugely popular series of Japanese role-playing games, or JRPGs. It’s celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, and the festivities will begin soon with the release of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined.

The dedication and love poured into this game series have clearly made it a well-known and beloved part of the JRPG world.

And the secret? Well, it comes down to warmth and accessibility.

Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, recently told GameInformer that the series is defined by its welcoming and heartwarming nature.

Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, explains that he wanted to bring a sense of warmth to his games, something he felt was missing from older computer games he’d played. He prioritizes this feeling as a core element of the Dragon Quest series.

He explained that the key to the series’ continued success was its ability to attract a broader range of players.

He also pointed out that the show’s popularity likely comes from its ability to connect people and spark conversation.

Dragon Quest is a Huge Success as It Connects People

Horii noted that many players fondly remember enjoying the Dragon Quest games with friends and family. He recalled some players even asking older siblings to play for them, allowing them to bypass the more repetitive parts of leveling up and quickly progress in the game.

Horii was joined by Takeshi Ichikawa, the producer of Reimagined, who sat with him during the interview.

Ichikiwa agrees with Horii, explaining that the RPG aspects – what they call ‘Horii-esque elements’ – are the reason Dragon Quest became so popular with fans.

Ichikawa described the story as having a lot of charming humor, jokes, and endearing character interactions. They also noted that despite being an epic tale, it manages to feel personally relatable.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is slated to release in February 2026 on both PC and consoles.
