Square Enix and Artdink have shared fresh details and screenshots for the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, giving fans a look at how each game’s story begins.

■ Launching Soon! Experience a Story Brought Together by the Descendants of Erdrick!

Get ready for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, launching worldwide on October 30, 2025, for multiple platforms! This game beautifully remakes both Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II – a story that takes place after the events of Dragon Quest III – into a single, expansive adventure. It’s not just a visual update; the game features a brand new story, expanded areas and dungeons, exciting new characters, and challenging enemies. New gameplay features like sigils and scrolls have been added, and battles have been completely revamped! Experience the epic conclusion of the Erdrick Trilogy in stunning HD-2D!

Experience a richer, more immersive story in Dragon Quest I! You’ll meet diverse characters and battle powerful new enemies as you explore the world.

Dragon Quest II introduces a brand new area to explore: the ocean floor! Dive in and discover a mysterious underwater world!

In Dragon Quest II, you’ll be joined by the Princess of Cannock! The game also now includes more scenes that explore the characters’ feelings and motivations.

In the first two Dragon Quest games, you can learn new abilities and spells by using scrolls. Plus, utilize the power of sigils to overcome your enemies!

■ Introducing Dragon Quest I

Start your epic journey! Discover the world of Alefgard, led by a puzzling voice that will guide your way.

You awaken with a strange voice echoing in your dreams, leading you to Tantegel Castle. The king asks for your help in uncovering the truth about the hero Erdrick and the source of the voice. Your journey begins towards Erdrick’s Hollow and the Shrine of Rain. As you travel across the land of Alefgard, listen closely to the tales of the people you meet – the legend of Erdrick holds the key!

—Make preparations before setting out on your adventure!

The king of Tantegel will give you helpful items and gold. Use the gold to purchase new gear and equipment. Don’t forget – you need to actually equip items before you can use them!

—Depart Tantegel and head for Erdrick’s Hollow!

Save time by assigning your most-used commands to shortcut buttons. This is especially helpful for quickly using items you collect from glowing areas during gameplay!

—Battle monsters in the overworld and dungeons!

During the game, you can see how strong monsters are before you make a move. Pay attention to your enemies and choose your attacks carefully!

—Dungeons and caves are packed with treasure!

Okay, so exploring those dungeons is seriously risky, but the rewards are SO worth it! You can find awesome stuff like scrolls and these little mini medals hidden all over the place. And get this – if you collect a bunch of those mini medals and give them to the person who’s collecting, they’ll trade you some really amazing, high-end items. It’s a great way to get some seriously cool gear!

—Talk to the people you meet on your journey!

While exploring, you stumble upon what looks like an old, crumbling ruin! You find a bard named Zalen studying the legend of Erdrick, but something seems off…

—What does the sage speak of at the Shrine of Rain…?

I just heard there’s an old sage hanging out at the Shrine of Rain – the one everyone’s been searching for! I’m really hoping he knows something about Erdrick, or maybe even that mysterious voice that’s been guiding me. I’m heading there right away to find out!

What secrets will be revealed on this long journey? The epic quest of Erdrick’s descendants has begun!

■ Introducing Dragon Quest II

Embark on an epic journey to fight back against a rising darkness! Join the descendants of the legendary Erdrick and begin an unforgettable adventure with your allies.

—Speak with the King of Midenhall and begin your adventure!

Before you begin your journey, your father, the king, will give you a necklace called the Princess’s Pledge and offer words of encouragement. Legend says this necklace has magical properties and will help you along the way.

—Explore every corner of the overworld!

You can now toggle the display of hidden zone locations and treasure chest positions directly in the game’s settings. This means you can choose to see where secret areas and chests are on the field and map, or keep them hidden for a greater challenge.

—Take a breather in a town along the way!

When you make purchases in shops, you might receive “tombola tickets.” If you collect enough, you can use them to try your luck at the “tombola stalls” located throughout the game world!

—Upon arriving at Cannock Castle…

You’ve arrived at Cannock Castle, but the Prince is nowhere to be found! Join his sister, the Princess, on a quest to find him!

—Embark on an adventure with the Princess of Cannock!

So, I’m on the hunt for the Prince, and guess what? The Princess of Cannock decided to tag along and fight with me! I can’t directly control what she does yet, but she’s a huge help – she’s throwing out attacks and even healing me during battles, which is awesome.

—Where could the Prince of Cannock be…?

We’ve looked all over for the prince using the clues, but he’s still missing. Let’s go back and check the places we’ve already searched.

Will they safely reunite with the Prince of Cannock…!? The protagonists’ adventure continues!!

Explore the ocean floor to collect lost memories and reveal the hidden history and untold truths of Alefgard!

Throughout your journey in Dragon Quest II, you’ll meet fairies who need your help. They’ll ask you to gather lost memories from the bottom of the ocean, which will reveal the story of Alefgard.

The Record-Keeper, responsible for preserving the memories of the faeries, needs your help collecting living memories that hold the history of Alefgard.

Okay, so I just found out that Hargon’s guys tossed these ‘living memories’ all over the ocean floor! It’s a real mess. I need to chat with people who know the sea – like merfolk, hopefully – and start a serious search down there. Wish me luck, it sounds like a huge job!

As you explore the ocean floor, you’ll find beautiful, glowing remnants of the past! But be careful – dangerous creatures also live down there, so watch your step.

The inherited memories appear to hold accounts of past events and information about the hero who was an ancestor of the main characters.
