Sometimes a show unexpectedly appears on a streaming service and quickly gains a dedicated, but also often divided, fanbase. Unfortunately, Netflix is repeating a pattern and removing one of its best shows – and this time, it may be very difficult to watch anywhere else. The cancellation has upset fans so much that they started an online petition hoping to bring it back.
Fans are disappointed to learn that She-Ra and the Princesses of Power will be removed from Netflix on February 21st. The cancellation itself was upsetting, but the complete removal of the show from the platform, without any explanation, has added to the frustration. According to the show’s creator, ND Stevenson, this has happened to other Dreamworks series as well, due to expiring licensing agreements with Netflix. Stevenson explained that showrunners have no say in these decisions, and years of work by the creative teams have resulted in the show having no streaming home.
It’s Always Disappointing When Our Favorite Media Disappears
I’m honestly gutted that this show is leaving Netflix! It’s been a huge hit – critics loved it with a 96% score, and most of us fans gave it an 84% – so it’s just so frustrating to see it go. I was reading Reddit, and one fan hit the nail on the head: it’s depressing how little control creators have. They pour their hearts into these projects, and then someone higher up just decides it’s not worth keeping around. Another person pointed out that it seems to happen a lot with shows led by queer showrunners, and they joked about how often they’ve seen creators basically suggest people just pirate the show. It’s just… really sad that this keeps happening to good content.
Noelle Stevenson, the creator of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, expressed hope that the series will eventually be released on DVD, but acknowledged that this isn’t guaranteed, especially for LGBTQ+ media which often faces erasure. She encouraged fans to watch and preserve the show while they can, as its future is now in their hands. While Amazon is making a live-action He-Man series, many fans feel it won’t capture the same spirit or emotional connection that the animated She-Ra provided.
