DreamWorks Is Now Making Its 9th Shrek Movie

Dreamworks, the studio behind hit animated franchises like Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, and Shrek, is working on another spin-off movie based on the Shrek universe. While Shrek 5 is already scheduled for release in Summer 2027, reports suggest Dreamworks is also developing additional spin-off projects to expand the world of Far Far Away.

Movie insider Daniel Richtman reports that Dreamworks is working on another Puss in Boots movie, continuing the story after 2022’s The Last Wish. This film will be the ninth installment in the Shrek franchise overall, adding to the five main Shrek movies and four spin-off films.

The story of Shrek started with the animated film released in 2001. It featured Mike Myers as the voice of Shrek, a lovable ogre who lives in a swamp, and introduced audiences to the characters of Fiona, voiced by Cameron Diaz, and Donkey, voiced by Eddie Murphy, all within a fresh and imaginative fairytale setting.

Many fans consider Shrek 2 to be the best movie in the Shrek series – a rare instance where a sequel surpasses the original. It was a key film for the franchise, famously introducing the character Puss in Boots, who later starred in his own series of movies.

Many viewers and critics felt that Shrek the Third wasn’t as good as the first two Shrek movies, largely because the story felt cluttered and lacked focus. Released in 2007, the film follows Shrek as he unexpectedly becomes king and then embarks on a quest to find a suitable replacement so he can give up the throne.

After the previous Shrek film didn’t perform as well as hoped, Shrek Forever After was released in 2010 with the goal of ending the series. The story showed Shrek appreciating his life and family after going through a difficult time and making a risky deal with Rumpelstiltskin, ultimately bringing his four-movie journey to a satisfying conclusion.

After 17 years, Dreamworks is bringing the Shrek series back to the big screen with a new movie next year. Shrek 5 will feature the return of nine beloved characters on June 30, 2027, and will introduce Zendaya, Skyler Gisondo, and Marcello Hernández as the voices of Shrek and Fiona’s children: Felicia, Fergus, and Farkle.

The popular franchise expanded with the 2011 release of Puss in Boots, a movie that told the story of how the charismatic cat—voiced by Antonio Banderas—became the hero we first met in Shrek 2. The film served as a prequel, detailing Puss’s beginnings and background.

In 2022, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish unexpectedly became a big success. People loved it, giving it a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and helping it earn over $480 million around the world. The film concluded with Puss in Boots heading to Far Far Away to “see some old friends,” hinting that he might be back in a future Shrek movie.

Eddie Murphy told ScreenRant last year that filming for a movie focused on the character Donkey would begin in September 2025. He described the film as a humorous story about Donkey and his wife, Dragon, and estimated it would be released around 2028, about three years from the start of filming.

Originally planned for 2026, the release of Shrek 5 has been pushed to June 2027. It will now be released alongside other major animated films like The Simpsons Movie 2, Frozen 3, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Dreamworks Is Going Big on Shrek All Over Again

Dreamworks is heavily investing in the world of Shrek with several new projects. They’re planning a fifth Shrek movie for next year, a sequel to the successful Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and a spin-off film centered around Donkey. The studio seems to think Donkey has the potential to lead his own series of films, similar to how Puss in Boots is finishing up its three-movie story.

It’s possible that deciding to move forward with Shrek 5 could be a misstep if the movie doesn’t perform well at the box office. While the trailer received a lot of negative reactions online for a minor reason, it likely won’t significantly impact ticket sales, as the Shrek series remains popular.

The recent news about Puss in Boots 3 is still uncertain, and it’s unclear how much progress has been made on the film. Dreamworks has a lot on its plate with Shrek 5 and an upcoming Donkey movie, which could delay Puss in Boots 3‘s release until at least 2029.
