Dungeons & Dragons is currently enjoying a surge in popularity, expanding beyond its original tabletop game roots, which remain strong. With a trend of adapting popular games for television and film, fans have been eagerly awaiting a live-action series based on a beloved Dungeons & Dragons story: The Legend of Drizzt. Now, the creator of the Drizzt character has explained the reasons behind the show’s lengthy delay and what’s causing the holdup.
Drizzt Do’Urden is a hugely popular character, at the heart of a book series with 40 titles and over 30 million copies sold. So, fans were thrilled when a live-action TV show or movie was announced. However, it hasn’t moved forward yet. In a recent interview, Drizzt’s creator, R.A. Salvatore, admitted he’s also surprised by the delay. He believes it’s likely because studios are either hesitant to tackle such a complex character, or they’re leaning towards creating a brand new story inspired by the world, rather than directly adapting the existing books.
R.A. Salvatore expressed hope that he’d be involved in discussions if a Drizzt Do’Urden TV series ever gets made, something he’s been told is desired. He believes the initial hesitation stemmed from concerns about the character’s dark skin tone and potential audience reaction.
Salvatore believes a potential problem is that fans are more interested in creating their own Drizzt stories than in continuing the existing, successful ones that made the character famous.
According to Salvatore, a major issue is the desire to create new Drizzt stories for the show, something he has no say in. He strongly opposes this idea, stating it would feel like a personal insult, and questions the point of using the character if his established history isn’t respected. He’s dedicated 37 years to developing Drizzt, and wants that work to be valued.
Salvatore’s character, Drizzt, really transformed how people viewed the Drow, both within the world of Dungeons & Dragons and among storytellers creating their own tales. Before Drizzt, dark elves were almost always depicted as villains or, at best, unheroic figures. Drizzt broke that mold, becoming a fan favorite and paving the way for more complex dark elf characters in the future.
Look, this whole thing about adapting stories – it’s a classic Hollywood problem. Studios get their hands on something awesome, then feel like they have to change it, mess with what made it special, just to make it ‘theirs.’ I get taking bits and pieces from different sources, but Salvatore’s right – what D&D fans really want is a new story within the world we already love, not a total rewrite. Honestly, I’m really hoping this series eventually makes it to TV, because it’d be a huge disappointment if it never happened.
