As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I was surprised to hear the Duffer Brothers are already thinking about a spin-off! While I’m still processing the fact that the main show is ending after five seasons – and we’ll get the final episodes this fall and winter, culminating on New Year’s Eve – it’s exciting to know the world of Hawkins isn’t completely finished. It’s a little bittersweet, honestly, but I’m definitely curious to see what they come up with next.
I’m so excited for everything happening with Stranger Things! The stage play is already a hit both in London’s West End and on Broadway, and now we’ve learned that an animated series, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, is coming out in 2026. It’s going to be amazing!
So, the Duffer Brothers – Matt and Ross, the masterminds behind Stranger Things – aren’t slowing down anytime soon! I just learned from Deadline that they’re already developing a new spinoff series for Netflix, even though they recently made a deal with Paramount. It sounds like they’re juggling a lot, but I’m definitely curious to see what they come up with next!
The twin brothers have shared their show concept with Netflix, which initially frustrated executives because they hadn’t revealed the details sooner.
Matt and Ross Duffer are really enthusiastic about the new Stranger Things spinoff. They’ve said the idea for the spinoff is actually pretty different from the original show, even though it’s still part of the same story.
The creators, the Duffer Brothers, say they wouldn’t have pursued this new project if they weren’t genuinely excited about it. They’re determined to make sure the spinoff is good on its own merits, and not just rely on the popularity of the Stranger Things name.
The creators, the Duffer Brothers, aren’t revealing much about the plot, but they confirmed that Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler on Stranger Things, actually figured out the main idea before even Netflix executives did.
We’re definitely continuing with the project. Netflix now understands our vision – it took a while, and they were getting impatient because we kept the details under wraps. Finn Wolfhard actually figured it out, so he was the only one who knew what we were planning.
Even though they’ve signed a deal with Paramount, the Duffer Brothers will remain heavily involved in the upcoming Stranger Things spinoff. They’ve already started working on it, even before the fifth season of Stranger Things is released.
Matt Duffer explained that the idea for a spin-off series came from him and Ross, and they’re really enthusiastic about it. However, it won’t be quite the same as Stranger Things. The most important thing is that any new project comes from genuine excitement, not because it’s an obligation. They’ve seen too many forced spin-offs that don’t resonate with audiences. They want to ensure anything with the Stranger Things name is high-quality and special. Even though they’re moving to Paramount, both Matt and Ross will remain heavily involved, and they’re currently working on developing the spin-off.
The Duffer brothers’ contract with Paramount doesn’t begin until April 2026. Although the deal is exclusive, their current contract with Netflix might allow them to continue working on Stranger Things. Alternatively, they could be developing the show now, while still at Netflix, and then pass control of it to a new showrunner once they move to Paramount.
Matt and Ross Duffer are building on the world of Stranger Things with new projects. They created the story for the stage play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, and are executive producers on the upcoming animated series, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, though they aren’t directly running that show.
Stranger Things is a massive cultural hit, unlike anything most streaming services and TV networks have experienced recently. It’s hugely popular on Netflix, and fans are eagerly awaiting the final season, which is set to premiere before Thanksgiving.
Even after the original Stranger Things concludes, the Duffer Brothers have promised to continue expanding the story and keeping fans engaged with this universe for a long time.
Stranger Things season 5 premieres Wednesday, November 26 at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST on Netflix.
