Please be aware that this contains spoilers for the beginning of Dune Messiah, and may reveal details that affect your enjoyment of Dune: Part Three.
The new posters for Dune: Part Three perfectly match the tone I expected for an adaptation of Messiah. Paul Atreides and Chani look noticeably older and more weathered, which is great. Alia looks fierce and battle-ready, covered in blood. And it seems Robert Pattinson is continuing his trend of playing eccentric characters. Though, Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh, is covered in clay and strangely resembles Emma Stone in Bugonia… that’s an odd choice.

Picking up after the events of Dune: Part Two, the story jumps forward 17 years, and the new character posters reveal some significant changes. Paul, in particular, appears burdened and worn – a visual representation of his descent into becoming a ruthless, tyrannical leader, even more so than historical figures like Hitler and Genghis Khan (as depicted in the book). Fans are also puzzled by Irulan’s drastically different appearance in the posters, as she doesn’t undergo a similar transformation in the novel, leading to speculation about the purpose of her heavy makeup.
What’s the Deal With Princess Irulan’s New Look?

Denis Villeneuve has often adapted the world of Dune for his films, and that’s common when a director tackles a famous science fiction story. Any change to Frank Herbert’s original novel is a big decision made with careful thought. So, the recent poster showing Irulan with such a striking and unusual look suggests it’s important to the story, even though the book doesn’t offer a clear explanation for her appearance.
Okay, so based on what we’ve seen, it looks like Princess Irulan is wearing that mask to hide her identity – and it’s connected to this new character, Scytale. It seems Irulan, Scytale, and a few others are plotting against Paul Atreides, unhappy with how he’s ruling. The really interesting part? Scytale is one of the Bene Tleilaxu, a group of genetically altered humans who are all about using genetic engineering to gain control of the galaxy. They’re definitely the bad guys brewing in the background, and it’s a fascinating setup.
One dangerous technique involves shapeshifting, achieved through genetically engineered humans called Face Dancers. Scytale, a master of this art, can perfectly imitate anyone, making him a formidable assassin and political manipulator—and a key enemy of Paul Atreides. Notably, this shapeshifting isn’t restricted by gender; Scytale could convincingly become Irulan, appearing and acting exactly like her, to the point where only a highly trained Bene Gesserit would be able to tell the difference.
Face dancer abilities are featured in HBO’s Dune: Prophecy, a prequel to the Dune films.
One possibility is that the character’s altered appearance in the trailer is simply a disguise to hide her identity. Regardless, this change from the original story is likely to create confusion and spark debate as the movie’s release approaches. Interestingly, another scene shows her with her familiar look from the previous film, except with a shaved head. Some fans see this as an unnecessary alteration to an already changing adaptation, while others are intrigued and eager to speculate on the reason. Theories range from her taking on a Harkonnen-like appearance to it being a result of exposure to spice, or even a practical measure to combat the heat of Arrakis. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait until December to find out the truth.
