Dune Star Confirms Reduced Role in Part 3 (but It Makes Sense)

Unfortunately, Gurney Halleck’s role in Dune: Part Three isn’t very active, but it aligns with the books in that aspect. In a recent chat on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, actor Josh Brolin revealed his understanding of events on Arrakis since the filming is underway. Interestingly enough, Brolin’s absence from set might be advantageous as he’s currently busy promoting his new horror movie Weapons. However, unlike some of his fellow cast members, Brolin has familiarized himself with both the script and the book it’s adapted from, Dune Messiah, slated to grace theaters on December 18, 2026.

Inquired whether he had already gone through the script for Dune: Part Three, Brolin affirmed that he did, finding it excellent, even going so far as to say it was “extremely good”. He also disclosed that he has perused the book, Dune Messiah, which serves as the second volume in Frank Herbert’s epic Dune Chronicles. In the previous films, Brolin portrayed Gurney Halleck, Warmaster for House Atreides. It appears he is still maintaining discipline among his fellow cast members, as he playfully mentioned receiving texts from them.

Currently, I’m not present at the location you might be referring to. Strangely enough, I’ve received messages from folks who seem to be involved, yet they haven’t gone through the entire script or just their own parts, which leaves me puzzled. This prompted my conversation with Denis as I found myself wondering why so many people were asking if I had arrived yet. Have you read the script? It’s like a question about our plans to visit a bathhouse in Budapest. My response was something along the lines of ‘Come on, read your part, do your job!’

In the story of Dune: Part Two, Gurney Halleck serves as a mentor to Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothee Chalamet. He’s one of the few from Paul’s household who survives the battles on Arrakis and witnesses Paul’s rise to power in the end. By the conclusion of the movie, Gurney stands among Paul’s most trusted allies, likely set to hold power and influence in this new empire. However, without giving away any spoilers, Gurney does have a role in the unfolding events, but he won’t require as much screen time as he did previously. As for the change in focus, the narrative now highlights other characters more prominently, making it understandable that Brolin wouldn’t be needed on set as often as others.

Even though Brolin might not be physically present, it doesn’t imply that he is unaware of the production process. When asked about Villeneuve’s conclusion on Dune being a fitting one, he responded enthusiastically, “Indeed, it’s a significant culmination. I recently spoke with a high-ranking executive at Warner Bros., and they are thrilled, in a passionate manner. I mentioned something along the lines of ‘I’ve heard the daily footage is impressive,’ to which he asked, ‘How do you know?’ I replied confidently, ‘Because I am informed.’

For those eager to delve deeper into the world of Frank Herbert’s Dune series, you can find all his books in various formats such as print, digital, and audiobooks. On the other hand, Denis Villeneuve’s movies are currently available for streaming on HBO Max, and Dune: Part Three is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 18, 2026.
