D&D Beyond has announced its plans for Dungeons & Dragons in 2026, outlining a year of themed content releases. Similar to how many online games keep players engaged with regular ‘Seasons’ of new material, the popular tabletop RPG will use this approach to build upon the existing 5th Edition rules. The first Season promises a lot for fans, including updates to character classes, a refined version of the 5th Edition system (often called ‘5.5e’), updated classic adventures, and completely new gameplay features and storylines.
As a long-time D&D fan, it’s been awesome seeing how they’ve been developing the 5th Edition rules this year! They’ve been releasing a lot of ‘Unearthed Arcana’ content – basically, playtest materials – which has given us players a ton of new options, especially with subclasses. Sometimes these are totally new ideas, and other times they’re revamped versions of older favorites. It’s cool to see how they test things out! A great example is the Artificer class. I remember seeing an early version in Unearthed Arcana, and then it officially showed up in the Eberron: Forge of the Artificer book. It’s exciting to see those ideas make it into the official rules!
D&D’s 2026 Roadmap Shows Ravenloft During Its “Season Of Horror” For the Spring & Summer

According to the published plans for Dungeons & Dragons, the first season, called “Season of Horror,” will draw inspiration from the classic Ravenloft setting. It appears to be a reimagining of the popular 5th Edition adventure, The Curse of Strahd. However, the season’s core book, titled Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, suggests it’s more of an expansion to the game’s rules and options, rather than simply a refreshed version of the original adventure.
Similar to the way Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft expanded the game’s setting, the upcoming Ravenloft: The Horrors Within will reintroduce the Domains of Dread for players to explore. However, this new book, launching on June 16, 2026, is designed more as a sourcebook than a full-fledged campaign. Wizards of the Coast plans to focus on the horror theme of this book throughout Spring and Summer 2026.
Horror-Themed Subclasses Like The Hexblade & Necromancer Might Finally Come Out Of Playtesting

With the launch of the new horror-themed Ravenloft book, some character options previously available only through playtesting are now finalized. Popular choices like the Necromancer Wizard and Hexblade Warlock, which let players summon the undead, have been refined after appearing in several “Unearthed Arcana” playtest documents. Other horror-focused subclasses introduced in these playtests also provided inspiration for character creation in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within.
Updating these character classes will let players using the latest 2024 rules create unique and engaging characters. Because many horror-themed classes are already fan favorites, having polished, playtested versions will improve the game. For classes like the Necromancer, which have been revised several times in preview materials, a definitive 2024 version will also clear up any confusion.
Currently, there are at least three pieces of Unearthed Arcana content with character options that would work well in the Ravenloft: The Horrors Within book. Officially releasing these options would not only support the book’s marketing as an expansion, but also create space for future playtest material. Similar to how the Forgotten Realms book incorporated previously playtested archetypes, this would allow players to officially use content that’s already been tested.
Official Versions Of Other Archetypes With Darker Themes May Come From Season Of Horror Content

Several character options, like the Hexblade Warlock, Grave Domain Cleric, Undead Warlock, Shadow Sorcerer, and Phantom Rogue, are still in the Unearthed Arcana playtest phase. These appear in one document, while others—such as the Defiled Sorcerer (from Apocalyptic UA) and the Necromancer Wizard (from Arcane UA)—come from separate playtests. Many fans hope to see updated versions of these horror-themed subclasses in the upcoming Ravenloft book for Dungeons & Dragons.
Even if some of the more ominous character options aren’t included in the Ravenloft: The Horrors Within book, we might still see new unofficial playtest material released for the Season of Horror. Updates to classes like the Undying Warlock, College of Whispers Bard, or Way of Long Death Monk, bringing them in line with current 5th Edition rules, are all possibilities. With Wizards of the Coast actively looking to expand the game during this season, we can expect a range of new character options to appear, both officially and through fan-made content.
Following the spooky Season of Horror, the upcoming Season of Magic promises a wealth of new content for players in 2026. Plus, with a mysterious Season of Champions also in the works, Dungeons & Dragons has a bright future planned, beginning with a look at what terrifying creatures might reappear this Spring.
