For Dungeons & Dragons, Summer and Fall of 2026 will be the “Season of Magic,” bringing new adventures and gameplay options for the updated 5.5 Edition rules. This follows the “Season of Horror,” which revisits the popular Ravenloft setting. The “Season of Magic” promises lots of new content, including updated character classes and a completely original adventure.
The next big adventure for Dungeons & Dragons, called Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, is scheduled to release around September 2026. It kicks off a new seasonal format for the game, which begins earlier with Ravenloft: The Horrors Within in June 2026. Following the ‘Season of Magic’, a third season called ‘Season of Champions’ is planned, though details are still limited. Along with these books, players can also expect D&D Reference Cards, special events, and other partnered content related to the magical season.
The Red Wizards Of Thay Civil War May Take Place In The Season Of Magic Adventure Book

The cover of Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall features a Red Wizard of Thay, a well-known villain from the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Red Wizards are powerful, ambitious mages who rule their society through magical skill and manipulation. The most powerful of them often become liches—undead spellcasters—and the book’s cover shows one easily defeating his enemies with magic.
Since the 2014 adventure, Tyranny of Dragons, the Red Wizards have been struggling with internal conflict. Stories within that campaign and others reveal a major split: the undead necromancers among them are essentially fighting a civil war against the other spellcasters who used to lead the group. It looks like a large-scale battle between these living and undead factions is coming, and adventurers are likely to get caught in the middle.
New artwork for the upcoming “Season of Magic” book hints at a lot of exciting spellcasting content. Players can likely expect to uncover the mysteries of powerful, forbidden magic, master magical items, and help influential mages defeat the dreaded Red Wizards of Thay. While details about the adventure, Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall – including the intended player level – are still scarce, more information will be revealed as the release date approaches.
Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall Hints At Known Characters Fighting Classic Villains

The Season of Magic update introduces Alustriel Silverhand, a familiar face to long-time fans. This potent mage resides in Sigil, a magical city connecting different worlds—often called the “City of Doors.” This location, brimming with magic, perfectly complements the season’s themes. Players embarking on the Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall adventure might need to seek Alustriel’s assistance to overcome the Red Wizards who are causing chaos on the Material Plane.
As a big fan, I’m really excited by the artwork for Deadfall! It seems like Szass Tam, the incredibly powerful lich and ruler of the Red Wizards of Thay, might be coming back. He’s seriously notorious – they even included him in the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie! Honestly, he’d be the perfect final boss for a campaign centered around the Red Wizards. I’m guessing his schemes are probably what kick off everything that happens in the game.
Clues From Earlier 5th Edition Adventures Have A Chance To Be Paid Off In A Fresh Story

Previous Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, beyond Tyranny of Dragons, offer further hints about what’s coming in Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall. For instance, promotional artwork depicts Red Wizards of Thay battling a huge minotaur with an Omega symbol on its forehead. This suggests that Red Wizards opposing Szass Tam might be trying to summon powerful, evil entities to defeat his strong magic.
Minotaurs are often found serving Baphomet, a powerful demon prince who embodies evil and chaos. While Baphomet’s strength could be a strong defense against magic users, summoning demons is always risky. The adventure Out of the Abyss (published in 2015) showcases Baphomet’s influence, detailing how he led a demonic invasion of the Underdark alongside other formidable beings like Demogorgon.
Whether familiar or new faces lead the way, finishing storylines that began over ten years ago could be a real highlight for dedicated Dungeons & Dragons players. As we look ahead to 2026, the upcoming Season of Magic seems like the most exciting thing fans have to look forward to.
