Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is now a major Hollywood star, an incredible feat considering he began his acting career as a poorly-received CGI character in the 2001 film . Johnson hasn’t forgotten that he owes a debt of gratitude to the film’s lead actor, , and he’s publicly acknowledged how crucial Fraser was to launching his career.
On the New Heights podcast, Johnson talked about his career, explaining how Fraser’s support early on was crucial to his success. He then went on to say:
I always want to mention how generous Brendan Fraser was. He was a massive star, especially known for The Mummy movies. I was a complete newcomer to acting when I joined the project, and he could have easily been hesitant to work with someone without experience. I’m so grateful he embraced me and really helped launch my career.
Dwayne Johnson Has Hit a Rocky Patch in Recent Years

Warner Bros.
Dwayne Johnson has become a major action star in Hollywood, though his films haven’t always been massive critical or commercial successes. He’s been a key part of big franchises like Fast & Furious and Jumanji, and even starred in Netflix’s most popular movie ever, Red Notice. For a long time, it seemed like he could do no wrong.
Recently, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s career has hit some unexpected bumps. The high expectations surrounding his film Black Adam didn’t pan out, and the movie failed to perform well at the box office. This setback, along with his ambitious plans involving Henry Cavill and the DC Universe, ultimately contributed to the decline of the franchise.
Johnson hasn’t had another major success since then. Even his recent film, The Smashing Machine, didn’t perform well in theaters, despite expectations that it might earn him an Oscar. Things got even worse when Red Notice was quickly overtaken as Netflix’s most-watched movie by KPop Demon Hunters.
Dwayne Johnson is poised for several potentially successful movies. He has upcoming installments in the popular Fast & Furious and Jumanji series, and is also taking on more challenging projects like the fantasy film Lizard Music, now with Amazon MGM Studios. For Lizard Music, Johnson is dramatically changing his physique, losing significant weight to play the 70-year-old character Chicken Man in an adventure story aimed at young adults. The movie is based on the beloved novel of the same name by Daniel Pinkwater and has the potential to be truly exceptional.
Despite not doing well in theaters, The Smashing Machine is expected to be available on HBO Max soon. This will allow a wider audience to see what many consider to be Johnson’s strongest performance to date, regardless of the film’s box office numbers.
