For Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a divorce wasn’t in his game plan.
Everything shifted in 2007 when he and Dany Garcia divorced after 16 years together. It was especially hard for the actor, known for his role in Smashing Machine, to cope with the end of his relationship and the impact it would have on his daughter, Simone, who is now 24.
Dwayne recently shared on the Awards Chatter podcast that marriage is a long-term commitment, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. He explained that when his marriage ended, it was a difficult experience, and he immediately began to think about what kind of father he wanted to be to his child.
As he navigated these changes, he began to struggle with his mental health.
“At that time I was really going through it,” he reflected. “That was another bout of depression.”
Personal difficulties prompted Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson—who married Lauren Hashian in 2019 and has two daughters, Jasmine, 9, and Tiana, 6—to look for more uplifting acting roles. This led him to star in family-friendly films such as The Game Plan and Tooth Fairy.
He said he was focused on understanding himself, and that was his main artistic goal. He wasn’t looking for projects that would be emotionally draining; he wanted stories with positive resolutions, and that’s what he aimed for with his work.
Even if his divorce influenced his decision to take on more lighthearted roles, Dwayne genuinely enjoyed performing in them.
He said he really enjoyed making those films. He also believes they happened because, at the time, he was only looking for projects that were fun, heartwarming, and suitable for families – things that simply made him happy.

Although ending his marriage was challenging, it led to a good outcome. Dwayne and Dany eventually married Dave Rienzi in 2014 and continued to co-parent effectively, even becoming successful business partners. For over ten years, they’ve worked together as producers through their company, Seven Bucks Productions, in addition to Dany managing Dwayne’s career.
Although we didn’t end up getting married, we realized we were creating something special together, as the 53-year-old explained. We thought, ‘Maybe marriage isn’t for us, but we can definitely build a successful business.’ It just took time to make that happen.
