Just like sandstone eroding over time, fans who were hoping for a sequel to Jungle Cruise might be disappointed. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt recently shared some discouraging news: there won’t be a second Jungle Cruise movie after all.
When asked about a possible sequel to Jungle Cruise during an interview on Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast, both Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt said it wasn’t currently being planned at Disney.
Shortly after the film’s release in July 2021, a sequel was announced. However, Dwayne Johnson has suggested that recent changes within Disney may have led them to reconsider making it.
Johnson explained that Disney’s strategy seemed to change when new leaders took over, especially after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly impacted their business. He believes they reconsidered a particular project, questioning whether revisiting it was worthwhile after their initial attempt.
Both Johnson and Blunt seem to be handling the news well—Blunt even joked about not wanting to work together again. Despite any changes, they clearly have a strong connection, both professionally and personally. Blunt expressed her gratitude that they remained friends, calling Johnson one of the most insightful people she knows.
I’ve learned a lot from him and often ask for his advice or just to talk things through. We’ve shared so many experiences, and it’s great that we’ve stayed friends.
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt Worked Together Again
Johnson feels his on-screen relationship with Blunt has improved their acting. He explained that their strong chemistry and comfortable working dynamic create a sense of trust and understanding, allowing them to anticipate each other’s choices and react naturally during scenes. It’s like they just know where the other person is going with a performance.
This successful approach benefited their recent film, released in October, and is also being used on a new, currently unnamed project directed by Martin Scorsese.
Johnson believes the upcoming movie will showcase a great connection with his co-star, Emily Blunt. Described by Deadline as a *Goodfellasstyle film set in Hawaii, Johnson is eager to collaborate creatively with Blunt and the director once again.
Even with popular stars, the adventure film received mixed reviews, earning a 62% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences loved it, giving it a 92% approval rating on Popcornmeter and a ‘Verified Hot’ badge. Despite the positive audience response, the film didn’t make money, earning only $210.4 million worldwide on a $200 million budget. This poor performance likely explains why Disney has decided against making a sequel, as recently confirmed by Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.
