Just a few weeks after releasing their first film together, director Benny Safdie and an actor are already starting a new project. The team behind *The Smashing Machine* has secured funding for their next movie, titled *Lizard Music*, with Amazon and MGM Studios’ United Artists. The actor mentioned the film briefly while promoting *The Smashing Machine* for A24, and now the production has official backing. United Artists also recently picked up the upcoming sequel to Michael Mann’s *Heat*.
According to *Variety*, several studios were competing to make the movie *Lizard Music*, but United Artists won the rights. The film will be written and directed by Safdie, and is based on the novel of the same name by Daniel Pinkwater. Scott Stuber, who recently produced Guillermo del Toro’s *Frankenstein* and is working on the Jeremy Allen White biopic *Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere*, is also producing the film as part of the deal with UA.
Here’s what Courtenay Valenti, head of film, streaming, and theatrical at Amazon MGM, said in an official statement:
We’re delighted to be working with Dwayne Johnson again and to begin a partnership with the incredibly talented Benny Safdie on ‘Lizard Music.’ Everyone at Amazon MGM and UA was very impressed by their previous work together on ‘The Smashing Machine.’ We’re excited to bring this creative, engaging, and visually stunning story to life – ‘Lizard Music’ feels both classic and fresh. We’re grateful they’ve chosen us as their studio partner.
‘Lizard Music’ Will Feature Another Dramatic Transformation for Dwayne Johnson

A24
I recently read a summary of *Lizard Music*, and it sounds incredible! It’s about a boy who discovers this amazing, hidden world when he finds a secret radio broadcast of lizards playing unbelievably cool music. He starts trying to figure out where it’s coming from, and that’s how he meets Chicken Man – a really quirky, older gentleman – and his chicken, Claudia, who’s over a hundred years old! They’ve been friends for a long time, and they all share this same fascination with the music. Together, they embark on a journey that starts as a search for the people behind the broadcast, but quickly becomes so much more – a trip into these unseen worlds filled with beautiful sounds and a really powerful connection between them. It’s not just about *finding* the magic, but about finding it *in each other*.
Benny Safdie shared his excitement about the new movie, saying he can’t wait to see Dwayne Johnson’s transformation into the lead role. Johnson has already undergone a noticeable physical change for the film, appearing thinner while promoting another movie. He explained that he’s aiming for a lean but muscular physique for this role. This new project marks another collaboration between Safdie and Johnson, and fans are hoping it will be as impressive as their previous work together.
