Good news for fans of Dwayne Johnson! His action comedy is currently a hit on Amazon’s streaming service, landing in the Top 10 most-watched titles.
As a movie buff, I’ve been checking FlixPatrol, and it looks like Red One is wrapping up its run on Prime Video’s Top 10 – it’s currently at number 10 in the US. It’s interesting to see everyone switching gears after Halloween, really getting into the Christmas mood! Red One isn’t the only holiday film doing well, though. Jim Carrey’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas is right behind it at number 2, having actually been the top movie for the last three days! Now, Tyler Perry’s Finding Joy has taken the number one spot – it’s a Christmas drama, which just goes to show how much everyone is embracing the holiday spirit on Prime Video right now.
Jake Kasdan, who previously directed Dwayne Johnson in the Jumanji films, helms Red One. The movie centers on Callum Drift (Johnson), the leader of North Pole security, who is forced to partner with hacker Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans) to find Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons) after he’s kidnapped on Christmas Eve. Despite featuring a well-known cast including Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, and Bonnie Hunt, Red One didn’t perform well in theaters when it was released in November 2024. It flopped at the box office, earning only $185.9 million worldwide – not enough to recoup its $250 million production cost.
While Red One didn’t attract large audiences in cinemas, it proved to be a hit on Prime Video, quickly gaining viewers over its first four days. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, noted that each film requires a unique approach, and expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort in reaching the broadest possible audience.
For Red One, we always knew a traditional movie theater release with a full marketing push was essential. This got people into theaters and created buzz, which then led them to watch the film on Prime Video. We’re thrilled our strategy worked for our viewers, and we’re deeply grateful to the filmmakers and cast who brought this to life.
What’s Next for Dwayne Johnson?
Following a string of critically panned blockbusters, including “Red One” which currently has a 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Dwayne Johnson surprised fans by announcing his next role: real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr in an A24 biopic. The film, released last month as The Smashing Machine, has been a critical success, earning rave reviews and potentially putting Johnson in contention for a Best Actor nomination at the 98th Academy Awards.
Beyond the live-action remake of Disney’s Moana, Dwayne Johnson has several promising projects lined up, including a mafia film that could earn awards recognition. He’s also working again with Benny Safdie, the director of The Smashing Machine, on a movie called Lizard Music, which is based on a young adult novel by Daniel Pinkwater.
Red One is available to stream on Prime Video.
