In its previous versions, Dying Light emphasized close-quarter fights, but it also provided a variety of firearms for players to experiment with. According to franchise director Tymon Smektala, Dying Light: The Beast will follow suit and offer gunplay opportunities, as the game series has historically had a complex relationship with guns due to their frequent overshadowing by melee combat since the initial Dying Light release.
As a die-hard fan, I’d put it this way: “If Dying Light and guns were old friends on social media, their relationship status would be ‘it’s complicated.’ You see, in the world of Dying Light, firearms have always had an ambiguous role. When they first introduced them in the original game, it was like a familiar face from Call of Juarez joining the party. Yet, despite this easy integration due to their shared combat background, players often found themselves questioning, ‘Why bother with guns at all?’ The sheer enjoyment derived from the game’s melee combat seemed to overshadow their presence.
According to Smektala, abandoning guns in Dying Light 2 Stay Human resulted in that decision. Yet, this move created another issue as Smektala acknowledged the feedback on the game: “The first question we heard after release was ‘But where are the guns?'” Eventually, additional weaponry was introduced into the game via updates and DLC for Dying Light 2 Stay Human.
Regarding the upcoming game “Dying Light: The Beast”, Smektala stated that the studio opted to offer players a choice between using firearms or melee combat. Consequently, ensuring both types of combat are evenly balanced and equally effective for players became a priority. In Smektala’s words, “In Dying Light: The Beast, we chose to provide guns if desired, but we also wanted to ensure that the guns would match the intensity of melee combat.
Smektała clarified that the “Dying Light” series has always been about discovering unique solutions to challenges. This means exploring at your own pace, as well as devising your own methods to overcome obstacles. Currently, they aim for guns to serve as yet another tool in your arsenal. He pointed out that the decision between gunfire or close-combat should provide the same level of risk and reward, but in distinct ways.
As a dedicated fan of the Dying Light series, I’ve learned that the upcoming expansion, The Beast, won’t present us with a decision that alters the ending. The reason being, the developers are keen on maintaining a consistent narrative for the Dying Light franchise, allowing them to strategize future titles more effectively. In their words, “When you offer choices, it becomes tricky to determine what’s part of the canon and what isn’t.
The video game “Dying Light: The Beast” is being prepared for launch on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S editions of the game are set to debut on September 19, while the PS4 and Xbox One versions will follow at a later point.
