With the imminent launch of “Dying Light: The Beast“, we can anticipate some resolution regarding the ending of the original Dying Light’s DLC, “The Following“. The franchise director, Tymon Smektala, has disclosed that this new installment will not present players with a choice about the story’s conclusion to maintain consistency within the series’ narrative as it progresses.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Smektala expressed that Techland aimed to avoid any uncertainty regarding the future of the Dying Light series. He stated, “Linear storytelling gives us more control and a clearer direction for the series.” Essentially, he suggested that by opting for a linear narrative, they could have greater influence over the franchise’s continuity. When players are given choices, it can be challenging to determine what is canonical, so they prefer not to do so.
As a fellow enthusiast, I’d like to emphasize that it’s crucial not to impose your personal canon on others when creating a game with multiple choices. If we market our creation as a game offering choices, we must respect each player’s unique experience. For every player, the canon of their gameplay will be distinctly their own.
Regarding the future direction of Dying Light, Smektala mentioned that the studio aims to establish a more consistent narrative for the series. Essentially, this means they will have stricter guidelines on the decisions players can make within the storylines of the Dying Light games.
Smektała stated, “In the future, we aim to exert a bit more control over each new iteration of the Dying Light series. With many plans for its development, we want to ensure it stays on course according to our vision.
Recently, Smektala discussed that Techland is aiming to deliver a valuable gaming experience with “Dying Light: The Beast,” despite its main story campaign being approximately 20 hours long. In an interview, he highlighted the contrast between this game and extensive titles like Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey,” where many players might miss the conclusion due to the game’s vastness.
Smektala stated, “As soon as I begin playing ‘Assassin’s Creed Shadows’, I am certain I won’t make it to the end. However, I still derive value from my purchase without actually finishing the game.
Techland has postponed the release of ‘Dying Light: The Beast’ by four weeks. Instead of its initial launch on August 22 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, the game is now scheduled to drop on September 19. In their statement, the studio mentioned that this delay will provide them additional time for fine-tuning and to ensure ‘The Beast’ becomes “the finest ‘Dying Light’ game we’ve ever produced.
At Gamescom from August 20th to 24th, it’s been announced that a playable demo of “Dying Light: The Beast” will be available. However, the developers haven’t yet clarified how this delay affects the release timeline for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game, which are scheduled for a later date in the future.
