Dylan Dreyer is weathering a new family dynamic.
After announcing her divorce from Brian Fichera months ago, the Today show meteorologist explained how the split unexpectedly led to a positive outcome: a strong co-parenting relationship for their three children, Cal, 8, Ollie, 5, and Rusty, 4.
Dylan shared with Jenna Bush Hager on Today with Jenna & Friends that every couple has their own unique reasons for separating or divorcing. He explained that while those reasons can be complicated – “a story with a lot of wine for another time” – ultimately, Brian and he feel a sense of freedom. He believes couples can either work to repair their marriage, which is ideal, or accept that it’s over and move forward.
She explained that they couldn’t resolve their issues, so they’ve decided to end their marriage but remain friends. She clarified she doesn’t blame him for the problems, as they both acknowledge the relationship wasn’t working, and that’s why they separated. Now, she wants to focus on building a friendship instead.
Knowing that Dylan sees herself as a better friend to Brian than wife has given their children a clearer understanding of their parents’ relationship.
She explained that they even discussed the situation with their children. She asked her son, Calvin, what he thought a family was, and he replied, ‘A group of people that love each other.’ She then told him, ‘That’s what we are, and we’ll always be that for you. But your mom and I function better as friends than as a married couple.’
You know, I’ve been talking to a lot of people about relationships lately, and something that keeps coming up is how important it is to focus on the feeling of a connection, not necessarily the label. One person I spoke with shared that her partner really doesn’t care about having a specific title or what others call them. Honestly, none of the people I’ve talked to do! They’re all just surrounded by love and support daily, and that’s what truly matters to them.

Even though Dylan and Brian are divorced after twelve years of marriage, they continue to co-parent their children, sharing mornings, vacations, and holiday plans. This allows their kids to see a positive model of how to maintain loving relationships even after separation.
Dylan emphasized that his children’s happiness and sense of being loved are his top priorities. As a father of three boys, he’s committed to ensuring they have a strong relationship with both parents. He and his co-parent are dedicated to providing that stable, supportive family dynamic, offering their children a consistent and loving presence regardless of any changes in their lives, and always being there as friends.
Dylan is not only working on improving her relationship with her soon-to-be ex-husband, but she’s also acknowledging and celebrating her recovery from the heartbreak with some support.
She said her faith has been her biggest source of strength. Knowing there’s a higher power supporting her each day brings her a lot of peace, and despite any stress or challenges, she finds contentment at the end of the day.
